The book was first published in the '50s. In my edition (1974?) the synopsis is totally different.

As it said in the quote by EJ... Ernle Bradford is the author so it is clearly his classic book "The Mighty Hood" with and re-written sensationalized synopsis.

I have an old, worn, yellowed and highly treasured copy of "The Mighty Hood" - read and re-read many times. Based on what was known in the 1950's, it is a well-written, well-researched account of Hood's career.

The synopsis from the back cover:

The Mighty Hood....was one of the most magnificent warships ever built. Launched in 1918, she spent the interwar years cruising the oceans of the world, the largest vessel afloat and a proud symbol of the Royal Navy.

'The greatest and most graceful ship of her time, perhaps of any time, she was the last of the Leviathans - those mighty ships, whose movement upon the high seas had determined policy since the last quarter of a century. A generation of British seamen had been trained in her. To millions of people she had represented British sea power and imperial might. With her passed not only a ship, but a whole era, swept away on the winds of the world.'

I never really understood the statement "the last of the Leviathans" as so many "Leviathans" followed....

But shouldn't this be under "Calling all Mighty Hood fans"?

Agreed. I think it may be a little over romanticized. But when you look at her displacement, length, etc. She was comparable in size to an Iowa class ship, even a few k tons heavier. And she was heavier and longer than Bismarck. So the statement is largely true especially considering the time when she was built. Nothing really matched her on paper for most of her life until the Bismarck and Tirpitz launched. Of course Yamato and Musashi are still the biggest by a large margin. I'd say it's safe to say that Hood was "One of the last leviathans" but certainly not THE LAST. The true last are the Iowas. (aircraft carriers not withstanding of course)

Well even she wasn't as big as Hood. But close. Certainly closer in displacement.

Really? She was long & slender but I never really saw the grace of those British style tripods (just me maybe) - the cage mast was always my favorite! I think Vanguard had the better looking structure of the 2.

Vanguard's super structure reminds me of an Arleigh Burke destroyer for some reason. Guess it's just too flat.

So there is a question that was asked a few months back by another member that was never answered.
"Do any photos exist of the inside of either Bismarck or Tirpitz Admiral's bridge?"

The 1/200 Trumpeter is just big enough to add detail within this space; so I was looking through AoS Bismarck and see that within the bridge there is something called " Admeral's Bridge Shelter" that looks like another armored conning tower, much like the one on the captains bridge. So do any photos exist of this area on either ship and or ships plans?

So... is that a toilet in there? I always figured Admiral Lutjens was the kind of guy who would just wing it out and fill up the nearest coffee cup when he stuck up there doing his thing.

I think I was the one who asked that question; it really would be interesting to detail the area inside the admiral's bridge as you can see straight into it when looking closely on the Trumpy ship... provided you cut the windows out.

I never found anything to go by so I just left it empty inside...

Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, english isn't my native languaje, and has been some time since I've wrote it last time, so corrections are welcome.

I found this forum (and thread) searching for information about the Tirpitz, I'm a modeller and my main subjets are vehicles, but a long time ago when I was eleven my father bought me the tamiya 1/350 Tirpitz, and I really messed it, so I'm giving her a second chance. I bought the Revell 1/350 after some search because a lot of people said it was the best model in that scale.


I have read all the posts and now have a lot af answers. I want to thank specially to Olaf Held and his patience posting many times the colors used to paint her, one big trouble less...
I'm not sure the scheme yet, but may be H or J, I accept sugerences.

Has visited all the sites in the thread, and make some searches in google hunting photos, but there is some advice to where search for more?

I have a lathe, and I like to machine my own cannons and anything that can be turned, but I can't find the blueprints for the cannons, at least the principal batteries, I have printed and studied the pic that kabelodeovo has posted and I have many doubts, because I can estimate the measures, but can't be sure if the cannons are cylindrical or slightly tapered any one can help with that?
I have mailed to the Nanstholm museum but I'm still waiting the answer.

As a separate model, and only if I can gather all the information I like to make one of the turrets and part of the deck in 1/35, I can turn the cannons, and the rest is only scratch, But there is no photos or detailed schemes that I have found, any help?


And last I want to congratulate all the people for the superb models of Tirpitz and Bismark, really inspiring work.
