G'day Neptune, thanks for checking in :)
Great tip for cutting the tube! As for the painting, I always paint the bottom first regardless of colour. This way I can cover it up and protect the bottom while I continue with the build. Especially the way this ship is set up with the superstructure attached to the sides of the hull I make most of the fittings before the final paint of the topsides. So to paint the tops first then the bottom, could cause damage to fittings. Even with a red bottom and black boot topping ill still do this. The top of the hull is then given a light sanding, two coats of primer with a light rub down in between before the top coat. What ill paint next is the decks their final colour after I've given the whole ship a final primer coat. The decks are pewter grey so darker than the hull sides now, mask the decks off then give the topsides and hull the hull grey. The topcoat will have atleast two light coats maybe three so any overspray won't be a problem. Being an australian ship from the 1950's until basically now our ships are storm grey - a greenish hue to the grey - but all ships will be repainted from this year onwards in bridge grey - this is the same as the USN. Personally I'm still on the fence as to whether I go storm grey or bridge grey (haze) for you yanks. I've always liked that our ships are such a different colour, though I know since Navy has made it official, when Brisbane is commissioned she will be bridge grey. HMAS Arunta and Warramunga are currently undergoing ASMD upgrades here in Perth will be the first Navy ship to receive the new colour, Perth will come back in to be repainted and all Anzac class ships as they have the ASMD upgrades will be repainted at that time.

Both colours are actually quite dark anyway and work better with a darker undercoat rather than lighter. I guess painting lighter colours first when building RN ships as the bluish grey the RN uses is very very light in comparison, though the guys here who have build RN ships with the modern colour paint them in the same way.

When using the punch you show in your image to cut the tops of the bollards, What thickness plastic do you use?

G'day Mick, I'm using .4mm strips for the discs. I think works out to between 2-3inches so acceptable for 1/72

Made up a couple things, made the smaller speakers 20 off, still need another three as it must have miscounted and 5 larger sirens to make. Also made up a few cameras.

As usual once I've made something two times... I find something I don't like and make it a third! So here's ensign staff #3! And here to stay :) I know how to do the next ones now haha. I thinned the seizing down and lengthened the seizing higher up the staff, refined the light on top- a grain led can always be added to this as the staff itself is brass tube though the wiring on the light is usually run down the outside of the staff anyway. Have also added a cleat near the base and painted.

Mk2 vs Mk3 - much much happier

Thanks Chrischan, I really enjoy the smaller detailing.

Ensign staff's are rigged and all set to go onto the ship when ready, just need an Ensign :) the jack staff is also going to be similar but I'll have smaller seizing on it.

Image

Made up a second ensign staff and painted the seizing in the style of some US ships. Should look mint on a club mates Arleigh Burke!

Ever edging my way to being closer to painting her :)

Nearly all the cabinets and other fittings that are mounted to the bulkheads etc are done. I want these to be all added before painting while the lockers and deck gear I'll leave off until after.

Image

Image

Image

I have also stared to build up the forepeak as you can see below. To beef up the 'panama' port fairlead this area is built up rather than just following the bulwark. Also the top flattened area is slightly enlarged. The 'u' channel piece is the start for the base of the jackstaff. On the real ships the jackstaff is bolted onto here when in port and removed and stored on the inner bulwark when at sea - the mount is similar to that of an Arleigh Burke without having any tripod legs. What ill do is drill into the bulwark so my jackstaff will sit into it rather than ontop. If not I can see it breaking off with all the handling! Once the face of the fairlead cover is sanded flush there are two ladder rungs each side and a few power sockets for where the lead of the staff light plugs in.

Image

Have also roughly painted the radhaz circles around the ship. Once the paint is dry, ill mask off the actual area to remain red. The white vertrep (forward helo load drop off zone) and the fight deck will be done in the same manner. Once dried, masked off and ready for the deck 'pewter' grey :)

Image

Image

This way I won't need to worry about those horrible decals or even worse stickers! As once the deck is painted that will be masked off then the topsides and hull painted. Once all done I'll have perfectly crisp markings and clean deck and paint :)

Decks painted pewter and removal of masks.

Foredeck. The white needs a bit of a touch up but nothing a fine brush can't achieve.

The red markings have come out perfect, just a few issues with the white- I always have problems with white paint! Haha but overall I'm very pleased with the results :)
I'll leave this to dry out properly for atleast 24hours then start masking up all decks for the topside and hull paint :)

Thanks very much Sean :) she's a lot of work to get ready and prep for paint that's for sure!

The masking took about 6hours all up for all the decks but ready for storm grey!

Painting up the hull, I gave her four light coats to help prevent any of the paint running and it came out great I think.

Image

So after a very hairy few hours, Brissy is painted up! Here she is warts and all :) a couple spots will need a touch up by brush, but I think for the main part she's looking the part. As a working model it's not a masterpiece but I'm chuffed at how she has turned out now :D still a lot to do with all the smaller details as well as the harpoon launchers to make, the RHIBS and derricks to finish off and detail plus a whole host of radars and comm gear I haven't even looked at. The obvious bits are the stanchions - she has four different types as is typical on a DDG but will make them up in due course.
