1/700 IJN Yahagi 1945(Tamiya)
This is going to be my build of the IJN Yahagi. I've been excited to build this ship that had such a unique look for awhile but it kit is so poor(its date of 1972 on the fret makes it older than me!)by todays standards I've been putting it off not wanting a lot of scratchbuilding.
I recently found a Super PE set from Star Models and am going to use that.
The first photo shows all the parts that came in the box, minus the waterline plate and weight. As you can see there are very few parts and crude detail abounds on them. The main PE set I'll use should make the kit into a good looking ship in the end.
The first step will be to remove the smaller detail from the sides and deck of the hull in preparation for the PE in the set. This is the first time I've used an entire linoleum desk that is PE and I'm hoping I can make it look as good as plastic.

I JUST ordered the Yubari set two days ago from BigBlueBoy. I was quite surprised to see a super set for such an old mold just like this Agano/Yahagi is. However, I think this will turn the old kit into a block of gold!
Tried to get the Agano super set too but Freetime is out right now.

Anthony, I'll be following this build intently. I'm a fan of your work and Yahagi is one of my favorite IJN cruisers. The only thing stopping me from building this one myself is the simplicity of the kit and my lack of skills to compensate. It's hard to believe the Tamiya kits were once considered state of the art; that super-detail kit certainly will make a purse from a sow's ear.

I realize that I'm biased but, this kit is not such a poor kit. The overall shapes are correct, as is the scaling. It's really about the detailing. I didn't know that there was a super set out there. Plenty can be done with some of the older Joe World sets.

Star Models will post offers on ebay periodically. That is the only place I've ever seen this brand. I suspect there may be some new releases about to be posted for the month.

Yep, that is where I got it, a seller by the name of SS-Models. I tried to email the company directly via the email on the set to see what other products they carry but never heard back.tenacioustanaka wrote:PetrolGator wrote:Anthony,

Nice work. Also good to see someone else working in 1/700 , we seem to be really outnumbered here nowadays by the 1/350 crowd.

Some progress. #4 shows how I had to create all the detail on the superstructure base. Nothing came on the kit. #5 show scratched mushroom vent, slightly overscale but they turned out pretty good.

I Have had the Tamiya 1/700 Agano in my stash for years but haven't started building because I've been waiting for an after market PE set for her. Anything to help what is today a very basic model. Then I came across your build and immediately started my search anew. Within minutes I had purchased what looks like the same PE set you have thru Free Time Hobbies. Your work is immaculate and inspiring to me. I don't have too much experience with PE, although all my builds have some. I do have a question about the PE deck, namely how did you attach such a large piece to the model. I have recently started using gator grip glue and imagine I would start there. The thought of using AC type glue scares me. I would be afraid of such a short work window before any chance for adjustment is past. Also, what kind of primer would you use before painting the PE? I don't have an airbrush so it would have to be a rattle can of some kind. I haven't used any primer before as I usually paint the PE on the fret and touch up by brush after it's on the model. Thank you in advance for any help you provide. I will be watching your build with great interest...

I just used basic liquid super glue to attach the deck but quite a bit. I also roughed up the plastic deck and the underside of the PE deck first. Started at on end and worked my way back attaching it.
