Question on stanchions, lifelines

Larger scale models (I'm thinking 1/72 in this instance, but even Lingberg's Fletcher and minesweeper in 1/125) can benefit by replacing or adding brass stanchions available on the aftermarket from various sources. But what about the lifelines that ran through them? Were they of rope, cable, chain, or metal rod, or any one of these depending upon ship type and era? If of the latter three, any recommendations as to materials and sizes to use? Thanks.

Concerning 1/72...if you have a model railroad shop nearby they will probably have very fine chain, and if failing that, PE chain, some of which looks pretty good. The same shop will probably also have a selection of brass wire in various thicknesses. Scale cable is a bit more difficult to find and it could be expensive to rail a model ship, or boat, with. You could try very fine electrical copper wire. Take 3 or 4 strands and twist your own. Photo reference is very useful for the ship you want to do, as they have a combination of cable, solid bar, and chain railings depending on the purpose and locations.

Ah, thanks, forgot about that "crossover effect" with other modeling interests, the model railroad shop/club nearby may well have something to offer. Haven't tried the fine wire twisting technique, might be something to that given a little practice, thanks for that tip as well.
