Kombrig's 1/700 Maine finished.

This project started as a two week fun build to get me out of a long, frustrating tin can I was work on at the time.

Construction halted suddenly due to a puppy who got intensely curious as to what her new owner was spending SO much time working on. She... sat on it.

This was with one week into my build. Maine was 80% done.

She's been sitting on my shelf, collecting dust now for almost a year. I decided that I would attempt to finish her, giving myself a week. I used some generic PE railing and had to do some mild scratch work to replace lost parts. Masts were replaced with brass and and rigging is sprue.

Here is the result:











The water/wood interface will be covered by a border to hide the nasty spots there. Minus that, she's done and I couldn't be happier for a ship that, work wise, took 2.5 weeks from start to finish.

Very nice! 2,5 weeks is very short for such a result!
I like the water too. Which technique(s) did you use for it?

Water was plaster of paris blown into shapes with a small straw. I layered the base, calm sea with small amounts of plaster on top to simulate the waves caused by the ship. Water was hand painted a darker blue/green and progressively lightened via thinned acrylics like Jim Baumann prefers. "foam" is cotton and is VERY difficult not to overdo in this scale. I sealed the whole shebang with my preferred gloss varnish. Final step was to add a bow wave with cotton, "wetten" the bow portion of the wave. It's a quick technique with relatively accuracy for the real thing.

So, THIS felt good, especially considering the condition of the ship the night before:

Wife helps me with the bases. She'll wrap them in the twine, or do something artistic. The poor girl was tired (and two wine glasses in) while working on Maine. She... knocked it off the table, snapping the main mast and destroying the rigging.

Recovery was apparently successful.

Exactly! I'd say I'll have my wife drop every model before a show, but... too much work!

I'm working on another little 700 scale quickie and will post some pictures when it sort of looks like something.
