Re: Calling all IJN Yamato & Musashi fans
The first picture is obtained from the navyfield community site (forum thread title: Yamato's Final Battle Color). The poster said that it is from "Magazine for modelmakers Navy Yard".
The second and third picture is obtained from this thread.
In fact, if you search the phrase "Yamato llinoleum color" in google's image search, these three pictures shows up.
Oh, they have updated the Kure museum already? that's nice. I guess it is never a bad idea to refer to their work, especially since the curators must have spent more time researching on the ship than myself. I think you managed to change my mind, bucketfoot, thanks for the input. But still, it makes me wonder why the black and white pictures have them lighter colored than the other areas. Maybe it is caused by reflected light?

Re: Calling all IJN Yamato & Musashi fans
A couple of words about those two B & W photos:
The photo on the LEFT is from April 7, 1945, a heavily OVERCAST day; additionally, it is from the opening moments of the battle, with Yamato's rear deck being totally obscured from view by the smoke from the two bomb blasts that have just hit near the funnel and the smoke from her own AA fire;
http://www.battleshipyamato.com/index.a ... ?i=112&s=1
The photo on the RIGHT is from March 1945, when Yamato was bombed while underway in the Inland Sea, on a SUNNY day;
http://www.battleshipyamato.com/index.a ... 5?i=94&s=1
Once you know those two pieces of information, it answers the question as to why the lino stripes appear lighter in one photo than in the other; the other possibility being that they were painted a darker color for Ten-Ichi-Go, which is highly unlikely given the time frame involved and the lack of just about everything in terms of resources at war's end;
P.S. The original archive photos are from my Yamato web gallery linked below.....

Re: Calling all IJN Yamato & Musashi fans
After reading all these posts, wouldn't you think the ultimate authority on Yamato would be the Yamato Museum? With all the books that are available, interviews with the remainding crew members and Naval Experts opinions, it seems that the 1/10 Yamato Hiroba is still the best bet for the most accurate depiction of this ship. The Museum seems to retrofit the model when information changes through further research, so I would consider this source the most accurate, at least for modeling. IMHO due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, I don't ever think we will ever get a 100% accuracy depiction of what Yamato looked like on April 7th or any other date. It's fun speculating about what she looked like by us all, but it's still a stab in the dark. Example: All the Naval Incident Reports are written in Old Kanji (Characters) that have not been used in Japan for decades and on top of it, they are Naval Terms that to most people, don't make sense. My Japanese friend couldn't translate them and neither could her father who is an Architect. All the secrets of this ship are still secret, at least for now. A lot of the guys here have deciphered some, but not all. That's why I say the Museum seems to be the best source for any accurate information. All we can say is that we know the dates of the incidents with accuracy, but retrofit changes. exact deck colors, gun placements, etc....... are still up in the air.

I can't open the picture you linked, but I assume you meant this pic?
Skulzki's book only says that "white color is used for the stripes on the edge of the hull", so I am not sure what it is as well.

White painted rectangles (navigation markers) on deck between the rails are 10m apart. It makes the ships navigation easier by using them as a reference point to determine heading at nightMt.Niitaka wrote:http://www.battleshipyamato.com/thumbnails/600x450/Yamato_bombed_color_mini_mini.jpg

Regarding the colorized photo RandomNoob provided, could someone please give opinion whether the ship had the anchor chains in place or not?
Thanks for any help.

To my knowledge the ship always had it's anchors. The photo is not clear, but you can see a shadow around that area where the chain are laying on the deck.Dr_Who2 wrote:Regarding the colorized photo RandomNoob provided, could someone please give opinion whether the ship had the anchor chains in place or not?

Today 70 years ago Musashi takes more damage than any other ship in history and sinks. Tomorrow Yamato gets the pleasure of attacking aircraft carriers.
Saw this on the net and thought it was interesting.

Hey guys, I came across this part in my instruction booklet, and since I cannot read Japanese, I do not know what this piece is supposed to be. It also seems to exist only in the port side. Any idea what this is?

The only thing I can think of is the Port Side Receiving and Transmitting Horns. Anyone else want to take a guess. If your building in 1:700 scale the part won't look right due to it's scale.

The language looks like Chinese not Japanese.RandomNoob wrote:Hey guys, I came across this part in my instruction booklet, and since I cannot read Japanese, I do not know what this piece is supposed to be. It also seems to exist only in the port side. Any idea what this is?

The first three characters (in Chinese) says high-angle gun, so I presume it's a training device for one of the AA guns.

Since Fujimi is made in Japan, I assumed those were kanji writings, Sorry about that.
Anyway, is there a similar piece in any of the larger scale kits?

I am now taking a better stab at this and say it's the Moveable 25mm Single (AA) Machine Gun

Re: Calling all IJN Yamato & Musashi fans
It actually is in Japanese, but the characters for that step in the instructions happen to all be of the "kanji" variant, which is the same script used by the Chinese (and in many cases share the same meaning).
I'm now fairly certain it's a practice loading machine for the Type 89 5" AA gun. Veteran Models includes a much finer version in their Type 89 set, as well as in their all-inclusive Kongo set.

Re: Calling all IJN Yamato & Musashi fans
Baseballbrat, I am sure that it is not a single 25mm. That would be an awkward place to place it, and the kit only has one of these. In fact, I had to cannibalize my poor Kongo for the single mounts since the Yamato kit provides none.
I am going to go with Timmy C's guess for now, it seems most probable.
Thanks for the help, guys. I am amazed at the knowledge you all have at this subject.
edit: This is what Veteran models' part looks like. Can't find a better quality pic, but it can be seen that they have a similar shape
