1/700 USS Monssen DD-436 Complete
Hello everyone,
The USS Monssen DD-436 is finished! The kit is the 1/700 Dragon USS Monssen 1942 with the Flyhawk detail set. The barrels are from Master. Paint is WEM Colourcoats.
The build thread can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=157123
Thank you all that commented on it!
(I have recently acquired a new camera, I am still learning how to use it)
Thanks for watching!

Thanks Pat!
The kit is VERY nice and I think that without any extras, it will deliver a very nice model. In my opinion, patience is all you need for this hobby (and of course, the proper tools).

Awesome, and glad to see someone else do one of these little gems in their full-hull configuration!

Thanks Timmy!
Yes, the hull in this beautiful kit is just too nice to not use it.

After seeing this one in the flesh last weekend, I can say that the photo's don't do justice to the finesse of this model. And it already looks great in the photo's, so that means a lot!
And do I understand correctly that you are doubting about doing Enterprise next?
Cheers!

Thanks Marijn! That pictures do not do justice applies for your Lexington and Morris! Your models in the flesh are just unbelievable! I want to try some of the tips you gave me, so no, no Enterprise yet... Until I get better!

Nono! "Practice models" don't exist! It is better (= more fun) to just build whatever you want and "practice" on it while doing it. The perfect model doesn't exist anyway, and every model will be slightly better than the last one you did...hypno7 wrote:I want to try some of the tips you gave me, so no, no Enterprise yet... Technique is only one aspect of modelling; passion for the subject and artistical expression of that passion is another. These cannot be fullfilled with practice models...
If you really must practice painting techniques to boost confidence, just take a some scrap pieces along your build and quickly do every painting step on them before applying it to the model.
But you just won gold in Telford with your Hornet (deservedly, IMHO!). I think you might be good enough to build Enterprise!
Cheers,
Marijn

Thanks Marijn! I really appreciate it...
Oh believe me, I have a couple of Trumpeter Hornet hulls where I practice and try all kinds of materials and techniques. For me, the Yorktown class carriers are some of the most beautiful ships of that time (for me), not to mention the history behind them. I am planning to do some other carriers first (maybe a CVL, Essex, I don't know) so I get into the "vibe" of building the air wings and learn from that... (find a nice way to reduce those panel lines uniformly and make better folding wings). Also see what works for me on representing a convincing flight deck. Then I will do Yorktown, and then Enterprise...
Thanks again Marijn, it was great meeting you and great to have had the chance to talk a little bit. (not to mention, the chance to look at that Lexington!)

Re: 1/700 USS Monssen DD-436 Complete
Thanks Erick,
It was great meeting you too and seeing your models too!
Sounds like you have some work ahead of you!
I agree that the Yorktown class are some of the most interesting and beautifull carriers of their time. Their history should give me also plenty of scope for a diorama somewhere in the future, but I think I'll still build a Japanese carrier before that though...
The Trumpeter aircraft are really great, but I also wish they would not put panel lines on them, or maybe only for the flaps. And I wish they wouldn't produce them in that transparent plastic which is a pain in the ass to work with!
Cheers,
Marijn

That is a real gem! It's fun to do those small ships full hull. Very nicely displayed.
