USS Independence CVL-22 Gun count.
10 Twin 40mm Bofors were on board (AFTER June 1944), vs. the 9 stated in my book.
My gratitude is extended to Steve Wiper of Classic Warships for catching the error in my book.
Steve has a photo from a good angle that pretty well shows 10.

If you have purchased an Enhanced Edition of my book on the history of the CVL-22 kindly correct page 269 to indicate that she had ten Twin 40mm guns after the repair / refit at Hunters Point, when she returned to the war in June 1944. Also, please change page 804 (Specifications - Armament) - from nine to ten after the 44 repairs.
I will be uploading a correction next week however I would like to have the error corrected in the books you may have.

Hi Guys,

I'm planning on doing a 1943 Independence in here Ms. 14 scheme. Despite the eyestrain looking at photos, I can't determine if/how the haze gray was worked into the scheme. Was it everything above the upper lever of the island?

Interestingly, there's a 1/300 paper model of USS Belleau Wood, CVL-24, that I just found on Ebay:

I am surprised at the number of rarer American warship models, such as those made by Niko models, are made in Poland, just like this paper model.

I've come to the conclusion that Poles are the masters of model warships.

I have an article from a late '80s magazine about a gentleman who had build several ships from scratch, at what I believe was 1/1200. (I'll have to look this up). Everything on these was perfect down to the engine cylinders on the floatplanes.

i download this, and have it somwhere on DVD's...if you interested, i can try to find link for download...and than you yust need a color printer..:-)

Looks almost like Battan's camo had black in place of 5N, any ideas on this. I know it says it should be 5N,

According to the ShipCamouflage.com database, she's the only CVL painted in Measure 32, which called for black.

CVL-24 Belleau Wood photos in MS 33.3 Camo ?

Is anyone aware of actual photos of the CVL-24 while in Camo scheme ?

I've tried the Belleau Wood, Navsource and the Ship Camo sites, but all I have found are either photos of the Independence in 33.3d or of the CVL-24 in all grey paint scheme.

I've got two from Ron Smith (i.e. I can't share or re-post them here) that confirm the pattern and that it matches the design sheet really, really close (if it's off anywhere, it ain't noticeable from these photos).

Are there any pictures out there that show the USS Independence CVL22 with the number(s) 22
on the flightdeck in 1943? I haven't been able to find any on the net ( I spent about an hour looking at web sites) and CW's USS Independence book doesn't have any pictures showing numbers on the flightdeck either. I don't have John G. Lambert's Independence book,so I can't check that source at that time.

I was never able to find evidence that she had flight deck numbers, but Dragon included them just in case.

A quick tour through Lambert's book (which I did not have at the time of the design work) shows no evidence

Hi Gordon

I have been off forum working on a new book, and just noted your question.

To the best of my knowledge, Tracy is correct. I see no evidence of any hull number marking (22) on the flight deck in any photos I have, until after the CVL-22 came out of the yards at Hunters Point from repair of the torpedo damage received at Tarawa on 20 November 1943.
When the USS Independence reemerged ready for war once again in mid 1944, she had large Dark Blue 22 numbering on the flight deck on both the bow and stern. She was also wearing a fresh coat of the 3_ design 8A camouflage paint at that time, for the first time (mid 1944). The measure 3_ 8A would be over painted with a solid color (dark blue-grey) at Pearl Harbor at the end of February 1945.
Later on the trip to Bikini in 1946 for "Operation Crossroads" those large flight deck numbers were painted over with a white 22.
But for 1943, only the white center dashed stripes and the heavier (wider same length & spacing) flight deck side stripes appear in photos I have seen.)

Also, in addition to the large number of photos I have in the book, there are some great photos in "Warship Pictorial 40 - USS Independence CVL-22" - "Classic warships Publishing" by Steve Wiper.

Hello everyone,

Sorry if these questions where answered before, please point me to the page or post if so... I am planning a build of USS Belleau Wood CVL-24 on October 1944. As I understand, it was in Measure 33/3d. I have the Dragon kit (1/700) and the flight deck comes with 2 catapults molded. The port side catapult is parallel to the centerline and the starboard side parallel to the flight deck edge.

-What was the configuration of the catapults for October 1944?

-Also, with her AA configuration, what was changed in her repairs at the end of 1944?

-Any other changes I need to do to the 1/700 Dragon kit to represent October 1944 better?

-Is there a reference or book you can recommend that describes the changes on all the CVL Independence class ships? (Specifically to CVL-24)?
