Castle Class Corvette 1/72

Hi everybody,

I'd like to show you the progress of my current project of a Castle Class Corvette.
Just started this one after completing a Revell Flower Class recently and so this type seemed to be a good successor.

You can buy a ready made fibreglass hull somewhere (I forgot where) but this one was 1/96 and I wanted it in 1/72.
Furthermore the shape of this hull (same with a linesplan I found somewhere in the web) is incorrect, looking a bit clumsy to me when I compared it with the fotos of that type of vessel.

After all I found a pdf general arrangement plan here (http://hnsa.org/doc/plans/) and decided to draw a new 3d modell in order to obtain more realistic hull lines.

I started to build the model completely of styrene (frames 4mm, shell 1mm).
It will be for display only (no RC).

Nice indeed. You can achieve some sharp lines (mainly at the stern) with this way of building. Great result so far!I'll be watching this with great interest. Also a remarkable subject of course

Hello again,

I made not too much progress since my last post but paintwork on the hull is now nearly complete.
I used mostly Revell aqua color, only the off white is Vallejo. The colour scheme is WA-white and B55.
I found one colour foto on the NMM website showing a 1943 build model of the "Berkeley Castle" so I used this as a guideline for my colour choice.

Long time I didn't determine which vessel of the class I would reproduce. After studying lots of fotos I finally decided to build the "Hadleigh Castle".
The various vessels of the Castle-Class differed in many little details depending on which shipyard they were build of.
For example they had different in hull plating (overlapping type or smooth), shape of engine room ventilators and so on...

(I was not satisfied with this wire frame funnel top, so I already soldered a new one. Will show a foto of it next time)

I wasn't quite satisfied with those draught marks.
The roman numbers I had applied were too broad so I replaced them by some finer letters which I suppose fit better to the real ones.

Hi everybody, high time for a short update.

Slow but steady progress: The superstructure is a little bit tricky. Too many corners and edges and everything rather asymetric.
Instead of glueing it all together, I build it in several section to make paintwork easier afterwards.

very nice work stefen,i realy admire people who are skilled enough to do 3d drawings on there computer,i have to get out my old draughting stuff and muddle through,i have tried to master 3d but it just is to much for me,i admire those how can,keep up the great work.

...thanks Russ for your kind appreciation. I only used the CAD program for the hull lines.
For everything else I use scaled printouts of the original plans and do it the old fashioned way as well.

30 years ago.H.M.C.S. Arnprior for me,and H.M.C.S. Hespeler for himself.They're
both radio-control,with a hull length of around 45"

Thanks Scott, that's very interesting.
When I had been browsing the net for pictures of completed Castle-Class models, I found only very few examples.
It seemed as if they were not too popular among model builders.

Back to work: Here are my last doings. I tried to cut the bridge wing supports out of a single piece (the two parts in the middle) but wasn't satisfied with the result.
Finally I built them out of styrene stripes and find the result is matching the original much better:

Hi everybody,

here are my latest proceedings.
That lattice mast was a real challange to me. I'm glad, that there is only one to assemble.
The rest was only odds and ends. Completing bulwarks, boiler room ventilator on starboard side and the lattice supports of the aft A/A platform.

very nice styrene work, nice crisp cuts,sometimes thicker styrene is hard to cut well
