If you look at the Hunters Point photo, she's carrying Seahawks.
She got those when she got the enclosed bridge.

It will never float like that... My guess more than an afternoon was involved. What are you going to plank with?? Certainly an interesting development.

Yes in Iowa Trumpeter 1/200 kit I have the Kingfisher, but need me the Seahawk for the 1945 period.

The Seahawk are present in the kit of Missouri Trumpeter 1/200.
I from buy the kit of Missouri.
Bad choice on my part...

If I cannot find a Seahawk, that I chance my decoration of IOWA, but I would keep the mesure 22 camouflage scheme.

I have two Mighty Mo kits at home, one kit will be kitbashed into the current configuration as she sits in Pearl therefore you can have the Seahawks from that kits. PM me with your mailing address and I'll mail them out to you.

Hi

If you are building a current version of MO I have many hundreds of photos of her in her present condition. I am currently detailing my mostly scratch built 1:192 and might eventually finish it if I quite adding minute detail.

Hopefully this worked, copied over from my scratch thread onto my eyepad and pasted here.

My 1:192. Work in progress.

Hi Tom,

I would be interested in your photos of the MO. I have some of my own but not as detailed as I would have liked (was part of tour group). What do you need from me to get a set?

Thanks

I can e mail you photos of appropriate detail areas that may not be covered by drawings or may benefit from clarification. Cliffy B has been an invaluable reference for the Whisky Boat where he is on the staff. All the ships vary much in detail at this point. I will be traveling away from home for a bit during the holidays but do have many photos along.

It will be interesting to see how your project goes. Hank has had Pontos produce a deck for his late 60's New Jersey, which he should have in hand very soon. Might be suitable for a modern version, Hank would know.

On the main deck of the Iowa, close along sides of the superstructure, there are a lot of pipes about 6" across that sticks straight out the deck, reaches a height of about 5 feet, and turn a U shape turn before terminating like big candy canes. What are these pipes for? Are they vent pipes for some plumbing system in the ship?

These pipes of varying sizes are to equalize air pressure in compartments below decks. Without such under some circumstances wt doors could be impossible to open. I have no idea what the venting looks like where it enters compartments to be vented.

Well, at least one more has drawn his dagger and spilled his guts.... :dead: You shall now be known as Braveheart the Boat Builder.

Jason - On the drive down east yesterday (after realizing the Panthers were receiving an ass-kicking by 3rd qtr. and turned off the game) I mentally began thinking about what you actually were doing (not knowing this was occurring, of course) - only instead of the wooden bulkheads, using 1/8" thk. styrene. I was thinking, however, of a more complete removal (similar to RandyM's) of the stern section up to 1/2" of the sheer sides parallel to the top of the hull. I would replace the stern end with a basswood shaped end piece (appprox. 2" in length) and then using a center styrene backbone with perpendicular bulkheads at the proper stations per the body plan (as drawn in TFD plan book). I am visualizing the hull planked with 1/16" thk. styrene planks maybe 3/32" wide and once planked, the entire hull lightly covered with Green Stuff and then mini-belt/hand sanded to shape. I guess the main difference might be that I would NOT include the inboard shafts as part of the hull but additions to be shaped and placed after the hull proper was prepared. Those would be held in place with brass rods and the shafts puttied and sanded/filed to shape. Still thinking about this whole process....I even envisioned the same type of process up forward to correct the hull that is out of shape between Turret 2 and the forecastle area. Here, styrene sheet could be cut into the proper widths to resemble the lapped plating on the forward part of the hull in place of the planks.

I'll be tuned in to see how this progresses....

Last night I did get a small amount of railings in place on the bridge. Now that the TV disfunction has been solved, I hope to get the work area back in place tonight and perhaps some bridge photos...maybe!

They may take our lives, but they can't take away our moto tools!!

Tom - Planning and resizing plans + making templates took a bit longer but yea, that's 1 afternoon of work, believe it or not. I even started planking it late last evening. I'm using planks from an old Artisana Latina kit I've got laying around; after that, I'm gonna put a layer of auto body putty on top.

Does Iowa'so conning tower have one more level than those of the Missouri?

I was on the Iowa yesterday, and I noticed Iowa's conning tower had a row of vision slits below the enclosed bridge, at the level of the flag plot. But trumpeter and Pontos PE set both omit that row of vision slits, leaving only a row in the enclosed bridge, and another row above that at the level of the open bridge. Was that an oversight by trumpeter and Pontos? Or did Iowa have a different conning tower from the Missouri?

The conning tower is a multi-level affair that extends down into the bowels of the ship. Iowa had the slits and the Missouri didn't, but their conning towers are otherwise pretty much the same dimensions.

I also notice trumpeter had the slits at the wrong places, made possible by omitting the doors.

The Iowa conning tower is three levels whereas the other ships have two. What extends down to the main armor deck is the communications tube.
