Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

What are the cable reels used for? That's one question I haven't asked before.

I always thought they were actually hose reels for firefighting, but I got stuck calling them cable reels. I'm not really sure though.

I am not sure what they are, but those reels in front of breakwater seems to be located where they would frequently be wetted by sea washing over the bow, this suggests to me they are not for seldomly used fire hose, which when bundled on a reel and kept wet would mildew.

I have the answer to my Cable Reel Question............

The Cable Reel (Hawser Reels) see.... http://www.reelcraft.com/military/hawser.aspx is for storing the berthing hawser's / lines to moor the ship to the dock or another vessel. They can be made of rope or some are/were steel wire rope. I am guessing that can be used for towing too. On Yamato, due to it's size many of these Hawser Reels are around the boat where needed.

Most of the hawser reels on Yamato were probably used to secure the large number of awnings when these were deployed, rather than secure the ship to a dock. Yamato probably rarely if ever was docked at a pier - she spent an entire year anchored in Truk harbor and probably went straight to the dry dock in Kure or Sasebo if maintenance was needed. The reels were covered by a tarp when under way and in general, wouldn't be seen "naked", as most modelers like to display them. Of course, modeling a tarp is not as attractive as a hawser reel full of rope. There were also a number of winches used in conjunction with the reels located both on the main deck and on the AA platforms after these were installed in 1944. Neither the old or new Tamiya toolings show them, but they are in the "Super illustration" book. You can get 1/350 winches in the Hasegawa equipment set.

Hi, can someone give me some impressions about the Yamato from Hasegawa in 1/450 scale? Kit code is Z01 and shoud be a New version. I still have to understand also the availability of upgrade sets in this scale. Thank you

There is one detail set by pontos in 1/450, I don't know if there are any others..

I'm looking for a 1/200 search lights for my Nichimo kit.

I've searched the Web without success so any help or suggestions is appreciated.

On a side note this kit is taking way longer than anticipated, my sailing schedule hasn't exactly helped either. So far I need to scratch build the wind baffles on the bridge area, the ones in the kit are solid and looks nothing like in the reference material, and it looks like the funnel steam piping will have to scratch built along with all the fine details on the funnel. GMM, Tom's Models and L'Ansenal has helped improve this model. Been taking photos as I progress and maybe post them if this model is completed.

I'm looking for a 1/200 search lights for my Nichimo kit.

There are some on Shapeway but they're too small. Yamato had 150 cm search lights and they offer 110 cm. They do have 60 cm lights that you might be interested in

I plan on putting a simulated tarp on mine.

This is a better Yamato design. I would add more 6.1" triple turrets aft. And they can load the aft section with unshielded AA while the AA upfront better have shields.
