Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
To clarify the Signal Deck shapes, all five were completed with signal decks of the original shape. DUKE OF YORK and ANSON had this area modified in their 1944-45 refits, in order to fit a quadruple 2pdr pompom on each side where searchlights had previously been fitted (ANSON had brackets visible underneath the extensions to the deck, DOY had the brackets neatly faired in). HOWE had these weapons fitted lower down, on No1 Platform Deck, and KING GEORGE V didn't receive pompoms on the bridge structure.

Thank you TJstoneman for clarifying and for the feedback.

"Haijun" means "navy" in Mandarin Chinese.

According to WEM & Alan Raven it's called B 20. You can buy that paint from WEM or other suppliers. If you can't use enamels you can buy color guides from Snyder & Short and mix your own.

Since Steve Larsen's aftermarket kits don't seem to be around anymore, does anyone know where I can find high quality drawings of a HACS Mk V? I need to scratch build some in 1/350.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hey everyone. I just got a boat load of 1/700 ships already built in the mail. Problem is the packaging wasn't done very well and all the ships had parts broken off. One of the ships is the Tamiya King George V. I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the instructions they could scan or point me in the direction of the instructions online? Also does anyone have any spare photo etch they can get rid of?

HMS Howe 44, What would be in this spot?
Still working on my Howe 44 conversion. I know her lantern radar was removed from the y-shaped tower, but was it replaced with anything? In this photo, there seems to be something between the gun directors. Was it just a blank spot after the new radars were installed?
I cant get a straight answer from my sources.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Re: HMS Howe 44, What would be in this spot?
In May 1944 she received a type 277 radar, sort of the follow-up of what was in the type 273 lantern combined into a single transmitter/receiver. It was a single paraboloidal reflector dish that was first solid and later wire mesh (Howe carried the wire mesh variant).

Both radars were carried in her fwd mast; between the fwd HACS directors there appears to be an ordinary lookout position that was still in place after the radars where changed (I don't know yet what was placed in that tub; Duke of York carried a pompom director in that tub so that might be it. Prince of Wales had the same tube before her type 273 but no pompom on her turret at that time).

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Would Tamiya's 1/700 King George V kit, which is supposed to depict the ship in its 1945 configuration, be easily built as HMS Anson in the same era?
As one of you mentioned before, KGV's square shutters beneath the quarterdeck should have been changed to portholes by this stage in the war so I don't see that being a problem.
I've been looking at pics in the Dumas article. noted earlier in the thread and there don't seem to be that many differences between the two ships that I can discern.

No not easily. Anson had different HACS to KGV and if I remember right some of the superstructure platforms are different. You would need to do some research and scratchbuilding to convert KGV into Anson.Haijun watcher wrote:Would Tamiya's 1/700 King George V kit, which is supposed to depict the ship in its 1945 configuration, be easily built as HMS Anson in the same era?

To best of your collective knowledge, when they removed the air facilities and added the boat deck in their place, what did they do the hangar doors? Did they remain or were they plated over and WT doors added? What became of the former hangars?

IIRC, they were changed into a cinema/recreation area. This IWM image shows the former hangar of HMS Malaya in 1943 (aircraft facilities removed end of 1942). Note the split-level floor in the hangar and some chairs and a piano. Here I'd say the doors are still in place.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hi,
I did a search under the term "Hobby Boss Prince of Wales" and didn't find anything, so I apologize if this question has already been asked before.
Is Hobby Boss's 1/350 HMS Prince of Wales merely a copy of the Tamiya 1/350 HMS Prince of Wales kit?
Has anyone here built or at least looked into the Hobby Boss kit to ascertain its quality. It's at least 20 dollars cheaper on Ebay than the Tamiya kit, but something tells me the quality may be much worse.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
I would assume it's the kit that was formerly released under the Mini Hobby Models label, which was, indeed, a copy of the Tamiya kit. Same situation as the 1/350 Arizona, Pola, etc.

Seeking some late-war (1945-1946) Duke of York detail photos of any kind. Your help is always appreciated!

Can't get a much later shots than this. I bought one (for obvious reasons) and the rest are Ebay preview pics.
