wellll, the kit is more accurate, price is less, and I usually dont build the mast anyway. Are they that hard to scratchbuild? I have never really attempted too much in that area.

A bit scetchy but here is a pic of a Charlie prop. As far as I know it's a Charlie II, but might be mistaken on that.

Blades are indeed close together, at least from this angle. Pitch appears to be similar, although I agree it's hazy from this pic.

Outstanding thanks!! It looks like the blades are a bit off set though. I will have to check when I get home but im not sure if the kit has the platforms? that are on each side of the upper rudder.

All the Russian sources I can find say that they're counter-rotating, but I just don't see how. They are pitched in the same direction, but you would expect counter-props to be pitched in opposite directions since they rotate in opposite directions.

Those fins sticking out from the rudder are supposed to control the water's flow over the rudder. You can see similar things on the Oscar I and to a lesser degree on the Typhoon and Delta IV.

Awesome thanks for the pictures. I noticed on the polar bear kit there are also fins like that at the leading edge base of the sail. I haven't seen any pictures of those on an operating boat, only on a static display sail. I'm guessing they are for the same purpose?

The fin at the base of the sail eliminated a ring vortex that formed (if the front of a submarine's sail is perpendicular to the hull, you get a ring vortex), which was bad from a drag and noise perspective, but was especially bad for the Charlies because their main carrier-hunting sonar was in the front of the sail, where it was subject to a lot of noise from the vortex. The fin got rid of this problem and was added to most if not all Charlies at some point.

Sweet!! Im glad i get to keep them on there. I love these polar bear models, but getting rid of the mold seam around the middle is getting to be a pain. I am getting close to painting this Charlie II but i wanted to make sure about all of these little details first. I might actually grow the guts to post a picture or 2.....

How many doors on the sail ? I 've some draws show 2 doors on each side of the sail and anothers draws and photos with only one doors per side ......

Is it a modification on the 1972-1974 IPER ?

Judging from photos and drawings, I think there was only one door per side. I don't know whether or not there is a door on the port side, but there is definitely a single door on the starboard side.

If you turn the brightness up on that last photo you can see there's no door near the rear of the sail (no interruption in the railing that runs across the side of the sail). I'd fill in the aft door.

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have a good side vie of an Oscar II in drydock showing the various hull draft markings? I am finishing up HB's 1/350 Oscar II and I don't agree with HB's placement of these decals. Also, does anyone know if there are decals for the Omsk anywhere? I don't wish to build the Kursk with mine.

Looking at a photo of the Hobby Boss instructions, it seems they've gotten the placement correct. The draft markings should extend to the centerline, not the waterline though. Also, you should leave off decals 6 and 7, which are those weird lines that go on the side of the bow. Oscar IIs don't have them nowadays.

Few questions for the Typhoon Class

What is the length of the sub? 175 m as indicated on Wikipedia or 170-172 m as indicated on military-today.com?

I asked about this in Britmodeller forum too.
For the 1/350 HobbyBoss kit
There are some points:
1. The overall length is not matching with info on Wiki (it lengths 489 mm. --> 171,50 m)
2. Compared to the first drawing, the conning tower is too big, too lengthened towards fore side resulting in moving the missile cradles much forward
3. As it was pointed out here before (I discovered after reading 33 pages of this subject ) The flat area around the conning tower is too big too
