Calling all Tjeld-class & Nasty-class patrol boat (1960) fans
Since the other PT Boat discussion is focused primarily on WWII era ELCO series 77' and 80' hulls it would be best to start a new topic on the Tjeld and Nasty Class to avoid a topic conflict.
Only a few of these wood hull boats are still serviceable and of the original hulls built by Batservice in Norway there are at least two hulls in private hands undergoing restoration in the United States, both are located on the East Coast (one in Maryland and the other in Florida). The sole surviving Trumpy built hull is a museum display in New York. The rest of the surviving hulls appear to be located in Europe in private hands or as museum displays (Norway, Greece, and the UK).
Here are some links to the available on-line references for the Tjeld and Nasty Class:

Combatant Craft of America (combatantcraft.org)
Wikipedia entry for the Tjeld class patrol boat (also redirects to this page for the Nasty class)

I was just researching the Nasty the other day contemplating a build of one. Looks like theres no kits or conversion sets out there, but it would be nice to build a large scale (like 1/35) PTF. I wonder how hard it would be to convert the 1/35 Italeri Elco kit.

I forgot to include a link to a discussion top on the Aircraft Resource Center forums submitted by one of the members that is building a Nasty class PTF in 1/35th scale. He based is project on the old Lindberg 1/32nd scale Elco 80.0 hull which is certainly cheaper than cutting up the Italeri kit but he is using a lot of Italeri parts (20mm and 40mm guns) so it is still quite expensive.Philip LaVoie wrote:I was just researching the Nasty the other day contemplating a build of one. Re: Calling all Tjeld Class and Nasty Class PTF fans
I have a few images saved to my hard drive that were provided from several sources. This hull design interested me enough to acquire the official drawings several years ago from the US Navy Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). While I had been warned that the drawings would be poor quality copies of very old blue prints I was still quite happy with what I received even if it was considered to be substandard.Philip LaVoie wrote:Oh, thanks, I can use some clear reference pics!Philip LaVoie wrote:I was just researching the Nasty the other day contemplating a build of one. I also took the time to download a marine architecture program called DELFTship (this is a free program) and have spent the last couple of weeks learning to use it so I could create a 3D hull drawing. I am still learning but happy with what I have created so far. Attached is a screen capture of the hull profile with some coloration added to highlight certain features. The second image is the perspective view which is also colored to show hull features.

Interesting! I'm currently building a model of one of these, the Norwegian KNM Knurr. I've been looking for some pictures of the boats, the Norwegian boats that is, especially of the superstructure and deck arrangement, but they seem difficult to find (in resolutions other than 120x90...). That is a really nice drawing of the hull, though!

The Hellenic Navy is still using four ships of this class as coastal patrol boats. I am providing links to the pages of the ships at the hellenic navy's site. All four were built at Mandal shipyard in the years 1966 and 1967. They now have the torpedo tubes removed but their armament remains the same. I have some pics if anyone is interested and I think I can get hold of some plans (as built).

Were the boats off of Great Bridge, Chesapeake,VA PTF's and what happened to them? I remember them when I was little. You could see them from the Chesapeake and Albermarle Canal back inthe 70's to 80's before they were moved.
I ended up answering my own question.I saw them on the link : ptfnasty.com "Boy have they gone to pot!" Not many were saved. The last time I knew anything about them was back in 1996. On a link under:PTF's in VA?

For those considering modifying an 80' ELCO hull to a PTF, they are very, very different.

Yes. The beached hulls at that location were indeed Nasty Class PTF boat hulls. Dan Withers' page on the Nasty Class PTF has a number of images showing these boats in greater detail along with a description of what happened to the hulls.

Re: Calling all Tjeld Class and Nasty Class PTF fans
There is a company located in Gibraltar that now offers a variety of fibreglass hulls in a variety of scales of many small combatants and craft. The Tjeld/Nasty class hull is among those hulls that is currently available for sale. Scales are 1:72nd, 1:48th, 1:35th, and 1:24th.

Owner is Christian Sheppard and he also has a FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/mtb.hulls
Many of the hulls he has for sale can also be seen on his FaceBook image gallery page so you can see what they look like before committing to a purchase.

Hi everyone
Here's a picture of my 1/72 model of a Tjeld-class MTB which I just finished. It's scratch buildt using a hull from mtbhulls.co.uk
The Oerlikon is a kit, and the Bofors is based on a kit. The rest is all handmade using mostly styrene and brass, and detailed with
PE and 3D-printed parts. There's some more pictures on mtbhulls facebook page.
I have gathered a large amount of reference material for this project. PM if interested.
