I really like the effect of the wind blowing (with the flags). Really looking forward to see all those figures in place and more updates.

Meanwhile, I attached the aircraft and deck equipment:

A couple of wildcats which were shaken by the internal explosions:

Not really correct, but too much fun to leave out: parked tractor and forklift:

I started with the figures. First I'm doing groups of figures which form small sub-stories, and later I will add a lot more.
Here some of the last crewmen fleeing to the rear of the ship, while saving their energy for swimming:

Some guys with one of the aircraft:

Evacuation of an antiaircraft gun platform on the island:

A small part of the crew preparing to lower themselves by ropes (will only be added later) into the water. Two are already crawling over the splinter shields. Many more figures need to be added to this area, especially on the flightdeck.

Two teams carrying liferafts:

In this pic, a dark shape is visible along the hull which has the right shape and size to be a liferaft. I'm thinking that it is a liferaft being lowered into the water with a rope:

Of course, I'm not absolutely sure of this, but it is too beautiful a substory not to include:

I am without adequate praise. Having looked through several of the photos of the incident I think you are capturing it beautifully. Are you planning on a section of wounded being tended to I believe on the fan tail?

Thanks! Luckily I'm used to ambitious projects, and am gifted with enough discipline and a relatively long attention span.

Many thanks, that's a wonderful compliment!
I believe by the time of the general evacuation, the wounded had already been transferred to Morris. But then again, I'm not averse to combining different moments in time to show different aspects of the event and tell the story as powerfully and clearly as possible, so this might be a valuable addition indeed.
But since English is not my first language and I'm still a beginner in all things nautical, I have to ask: what is the fan tail?

Small update: the starboard rear gun galleries have been populated:

Question: Now that there are 1/700 scale 3D and resin figures, do you think those would have worked for you, or did you need so many custom poses that the pre-made ones wouldn't have worked?

Just watching these images closely is educational by itself. My own series of small brushes arrived today and the lining-in has begun in a pathetic attempt to get similar results!
