Thanks fro the NJ stern shot, reminds me of a stern shot or two of Missouri I can consult. Not remember ing the tub so cut away on MO. Missouri's armor was made from a different foundry than the other three ships so her turrets might not be a good guide, but looking at the Stillwell cover it appears that the strapping on top is still visible. Will research more:

Jason - I looked all over the NavSource photos and came away with the opposite opinion - that they are flush mounted consistently. They would not have been altered in their lifetime unless the top of the turrets were removed (none were). One exception is that 47 bolts were removed from IOWAs Turret #2 sometime after her accident in 1989. They were replaced with facsimiles of those bolts - this is described with photos in Rich. Landgraff's book on the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Still a mystery as to who, when, and why.

I just viewed your referenced picture - look again, CLOSELY!!! Those bolts are flush with the turret top.

Well, in any event, contact Pontos and see if they won't provide you a new PE sheet. You may wish to also contact the distributor (Stevens?) and talk to them about a replacement.

I found the shot of the stern of BB63 and it does have the deep cut in the gun tub. There is a device mounted there, anyone know what it is?

The bolts are not quite flush, the armor plates are.

Thanks for the better close up photos of the turret tops - I only stand PARTIALLY corrected (IMHO) as I should have added to my original comments that the bolts were round head and not flat head bolts.

The port after tub was converted on the IOWAs (in the '80s) to a jettison able fuel bladder for helo refueling and the cart was designed to be a quick release (over the side) device to get rid of the fuel in the case of fire or so forth. Once again, this is pretty well explained in R. Landgraff's book. I hate to keep referring to it, but it has a TON OF GREAT IOWA CLASS BATTLESHIP info in it that serious modelers should read. The fuel bladder is discussed in detail including the reasons for it being designed the way it is.

Sorry Hank.
I wasn't trying to correct you, just trying to show that the photo etch parts are pretty close to the real thing.
They have the 4 rows of bolts and the uneven spacing of the plates like the real ones.
The round headed bolts would show up like rivets in almost any scale.

You are right about Landgraff's book having a ton of information on the Iowas.
If you want to ask him a question regarding the Iowas, he usually has a lengthy answer for you.

No problem - You and Cliffy B are two of our greatest assets here at TSMF - being active "crew" on our small museum battleship fleet here in the U.S. AND being members of the forum. Nothing like a first hand accountant for items of interest and dispute.

Yes, I post now & then with Dick over on World Affairs and he & I have been in contact for a long time now.

That book has probably much info in it regarding (mainly) the IOWAs but also other west coast ships and projects that the Navy had going back in the day.

Tomorrow night I'll re-read the section in Richard's book that talks about the fuel bladders and see if there's any pertinent info on MISSOURI's that would pertain to your depiction of that tub. I'll let you know Mon. a.m.

Here's two pictures of where my built stands right now. Due to other priorities, progress is much slower than i'd like!
It's in my intentions to keep this project a fun one and within the reach of my available times and abilities

Anyway, as of now, i'm trying to bring the excellent Eduard boat set to life.

Sharp work on that Arizona!

It probably won't show but this is an entire Sunday's work on the Iowa, mostly because it took a ridiculous amount of grinding, filing and polishing to make those G-factor props presentable.











I've permanently attached the outer propshaft struts (but not the shafts themselves) and am using putty to create the curves on them...

Each of the ships seem to have a different pattern of the sacrificial anode plates around the screws and rudders, depending on where and when. Not sure what Missouri's are for my era though undoubtedly someone has some drydock photos of the modern era somewhere.

As to the "model airplane" fuel tank, making a small model of that to add to the aft port gun tub.

That would include fittings, weapons, photo-etch, turned barrels, etc.

It would be nice to have a list of all manufacturers of these items.

A little progress on the Missouri last night, re did the grating on top of the "model airplane fuel bladder" aft tub. Constructed the armored bladder and inclined skid and rails. Mixed up a new batch of haze gray, Testor's airbrush opaques: Neutral gray base; small amount of Ultramarine Blue; quite a lot of white! Working on a fire hose reel fwd of the helicopter deck abeam turret three and who knows what else I will find. Having hundreds of photos all I have to do is look at any one of them and there are lots more things to add! Then of course Hank, James and many others have made additional info available!

Current progress BB63, modern configuration. Superstructure is not currently screwed down, rigging will have to mostly wait for this event. I did modify the aft port gun tub with ejectable fuel bladder and added a fire hose reel abeam turret three for the helicopter deck.
