I finally broke down and decided it was time to come up with a better way of displaying my models in a way that doesn't take up counter and table top surfaces. I hate the idea of shelving or cases and finally arrived at this solution.
At IKEA, you can buy simple, metal brackets for about 2 bucks each. It was very easy and cheap to simply mount them on the wall with drywall plugs or into a stud, place the base onto the brackets and secure it to the brackets directly with a couple of screws through the pre-drilled holes already in the brackets. No shelves!
It was really easy, reversible, and you can arrange things how you want. There are a variety of brackets out there to suit all kinds of base sizes.

It really works well that you have the same display case for the models. What are you using for the cases, something of your own make, or something commercially available?

I have a guy in town where I live who will make the plexi covers for 100 bucks a pop. Good value in my mind.

Good idea. I want to display an Edmund Fitzgerald model (must buy it first) below my limited edition print of this ship and your approach eliminates the shelf which could be too chunky.

Ikea and other places sell a bracket-less shelf as well.

well now, that was worth looking at. I am wrestling with the whole idea of cases and shelving. Now I have a lot of food for thought. What I might have been happy with seems total rubbish now I have seen your work. The lady of the house might even let me display in other places rather than just in this spare bedroom (which effectively houses the computer and rubbish)

but of course the bane of the 1/35 battleship modeller is the considerable footorint that these ships occupy!

which is why I specialised in 1/700--that way you can have130 plus model ships around the house in glass cases and a happy domestic life...

perhaps you could copy some of the images/ post into this thread also?

JIM, Great looking display. Lovely to look at every day!
Regarding sagging: My bases are such that they won't sag simply due to their construction. It's definitely something to consider though.
