Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

In the underwater film of Musashi, the item labeled as machine gun emplacement is actually one of the MG directors located right above the bridge. You can see the bridge windows right below it. It looks like the remains of a ladder leading up from the front of the bridge up to this level has been broken into pieces and forced up over the bridge by the force of the sinking. I don't think Yamato had this ladder, only Musashi. On the view of the side of the superstructure, the rectangular structure you see is the secondary gun command station. You can see the tops of two periscopes on top of it. Even though the ship is in bad shape, these pics are probably going to yield a lot of useful research.

Mine arrived yesterday, we'll see if this kind of build is any better for my arthritic hands than a standard glue model.

Yeah the instructions being in Japanese don't help that. Thankfully, Google added a picture function to their translate app.

Nice job Jay McKeown on back dating the Yamato to 1941. I should mention to anyone considering this in the future, the Tamiya retool released several years ago comes with the original superstructure cast separately from the later AA gun platforms, so all you would need to purchase are the two 155 CM turrets. The new superstructure casting is also far more accurate (much more sloping than the 1980 kit, and includes some research that was not available when the Skulski book was released. Worth the cost, although not for beginners.

Thanks Doug! Once I started destroying the plastic, I quickly realized I had bitten off more than I could chew. The most disappointing aspect of the build was how I applied the wood deck. This was also my first simulated water effect - and boy did I live and learn on that one.

I was doing a super detailing of the older kit myself, but also have the new tooling and have decided to finish off the old one as an October 1944 version, and not worry about all the corrections. Have been on a modeling hiatus for a couple of years but you should see some note on the builds from me soon.

Judging from the pictures, it has pretty good detail for a beginners kit. It's probably a good one to start off with. You'll eventually want to get into painting and filling/sanding as your skills increase.

Really well-done Yamato new-tool featuring Ishida add-on parts and Lion Roar PE. I very much disagree with "yellow" Hinoki pine decks, but the weathering is really outstanding. Yamato spent the entire winter in cold, rainy Japan. Even without the question of painting them black prior to the sortie, the decks would have faded to grey well before April. No, they would not have been holy-stoned. This was a wartime ship and having the decks gleaming in the sun would have been the last thing the IJN wanted.

I think a few years aqo there were around 50. Another thing to consider - I don't think the IJN positioned float planes on catapults until shortly before launch. That's why they had those big aircraft handling decks. If you're going to portray the ship at anchor, they probably wouldn't be on deck at all (allocated to the base commander for anti-sub patrols outside the perimeter. Also, it seems the thinking coming out of Japan these days is that the linoleum strips on the deck were ripped out prior to April 1945. I notice this modeler does not include them.
