It's been a great pleasure to follow this build - I would never be able to produce such great stuff, most notably self-made photoetch. You've replicated this very complex ship right to its tiniest detail in 1:700 - quite a feat!
Hats off to you.

arghggghhhhhh ....

the magnifying glass did that... that is terribly sad--

tricky to fix it looks to me-- the small boat is easy enough -replace it

the damaged case-mate looks harder

you have my sincere sympathies

best of luck and let us know how the repairs go

Sorry to hear that happened to your work of art Greg! As Jim said the boat is replaceable but, just say those other two blemishes were USS Washington's smaller 5inch shells that glanced off of her before her main 16 armament did the rest Battle damage. :cool_2:

Ouch. Well, at least you didn't drop it. Time for a refit already.

This has been a fantastic project to follow, and an inspiration.

Great build, Greg. Your dedication to detail is incredible. It's hard to believe that ship is 1/700 scale. Thank you for sharing the construction process with us.

Ouch! that must've been a pretty thick magnifying glass, take your time repairing the damage though

A fantastic job, construction cleaning is very good and the paint very, very thin.

Congratulations.

Great job.

i think that for your next build ou can try to use some Photo Etched parts.

you know, they really add smoething to a ship, like railings, hatches and so on. they are tiny thin copper foils etched to obtain small and fragile bits...

Talk about leaving one feeling totally inadequate.

For a second, I thought this was a ship by a guy I see on eBay every now and then:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-700-built-IJN ... 2ee569aa73

When I first saw the image of his ship, I thought it was a photo of the real thing.

Image

Which is exactly how I feel when looking at this ship (The Kirishima in this thread): Like I am looking at the real thing.

It leaves one feeling very insecure and, ironically (considering the size of the model), insignificant.

I have this same ship I will be building over the next few months (although just with either the Flyhawk, or Gold Medal PE set for it - and the Hiei with her).... And now I feel like anything I do will never be good enough.

I am doing all of the ships for the major surface actions in the Solomons (a few hundred ships total). I have most of the American Ships (fewer than the Japanese), but I still have a LOT of Japanese Destroyers to go.

I am left with the feeling that unless I do PE on all of them, it will not be good enough, after seeing this Kirishima.
