1/700 USS Zumwalt - Dragon

Post by camponubla »

Then, here the next project (in parallel with the "eternal" Colombo Express), the USS Zumwalt, the new Destroyer Class of the US Navy.

The kit is a "smart kit", and I bought a PE set specific for this kit.

Looks like you could do the entire build including PE in an afternoon! Not an extensive high parts count kit from Dragon. Do you have to sand down any kit surface detail to properly attach the PE panels? :wave_1:

On the BBB package it says there are 3 PE pieces, but from looking at the instruction sheet there appears to be much more! :wave_1:

On the BBB package are also supplied some railings to put in the bow zone and near the hangar zone.

"Pieces" refers to frets/sheets.

Glad to see this ship being built!

Alas, the seams on this kit require significant attention, particularly at the bow and the superstructure. The initial BigBoyBlue PE set assembles in multiple pieces, too, but appears from this build not to have seam issues at the joints. BigBoyBlue announced this month that they will be releasing a one-piece water-lined hull in resin that should further address the seam issues.

Yes, I had to use a lot of putty!

I can only applaud your dedication to this model, and look forward to see you finish it as a job well done.

That said, the ship design itself is so hideous that it should be banned from sailing, and the designers banned from ever touching a drawing board (old school or digital again). I can honestly say I have never seen a ship coming somewhere remotely close in ugliness to this ship design.

For clarity's sake, that is NOT a knock on your modelling skills, which are top notch.

Cheers,

Harm

Hmm, I think this one is a pretty good contender - at least Zumwalt is radical enough that you can't really make a decent apples-to-apples comparison:

True....

and yeah, it is an ugly ship (mostly the bridge section). I have to say the rebuilt Baltimore cruisers rank up there as well....

Depending on the ships' performance, this may very well be the future of ship designs. At least until they start flying, too!
