My thoughts, if the Japanese sailors stained them with soot, why would charcoal, which is soot, not give the same effect
Decks sealed with a clear fixative

Turning out REAL nice!!! Making very steady progress I see, slowly it starts looking like the real thing. Love the wooden planking, looks very realistic in the on-deck shot.
