BTW, in case you haven't seen yet, Pontos has released a "black" wood deck version for Yamato. It also includes decals for both the white rectangular deck markings and numbers assigned to each of those marks. yes, I have one myself.

My guess is that the white markings were directional references for the additional AA guns added to the deck. These were probably not auto-controlled by the gun directors on the superstructure and had to get their data verbally. Probably the personnel for all those new guns were drafted from Kure naval base personnel and were technically not part of Yamato's crew.

Allow me one last personal comment on modeling the new tool Tamiya Yamato: every major manufacturer now makes a new tool Yamato enhancement set. On top of the one you choose, if you are a stickler for accuracy,I believe you should consider a couple of extra sets made by Chrysanthemum & Sword/Genuine Models of Japan, which actually accurize the model and do not simply replace plastic with brass. . To regular users of this thread, the name "Mr. Ishida" might ring a bell. These are his products. I don't know how widely available they are, but I found mine at HobbyEasy of Hong Kong.

A new Yamato correction posted by one of the Japanese modelers I follow - if you look at the rear set of rectangular windows located just to the left of the gun director on the high pedestal, he has added a small open platform with a couple of binoculars on it. Although his scratch build kit is of Musashi, if you look closely of the famous picture of Yamato under construction (see colorized photo posted from this site:

you can also see the same platform on Yamato. Its covered by a piece of sheet metal or plywood, but its clearly there. You may want to download and expand the Yamato pic for a better view of it.

Dunno how many of you have seen this pic, but I thought I'd post it here anyways. This is NOT photoshopped! This was discovered in the estate of former IJN Captain Nagahashi Tameshige, the first Gunnery Officer of Musashi. The pic shows Musashi on trials in August 1942 doing what we all dreamed of seeing, but knew we probably never would. Now it's a reality. Enjoy!

The consensus on J-ships is that this view is from aft, starboard, and it may be only B turret that is firing.

If I may, I believe the photo was taken from a position off Musashi's port quarter.
