Ship ID Requested

Post by Cliffy B »

Saw this odd looking amphib(?) pulling into the shipping terminal as we closed up the Wisconsin today. sorry for the grainy shot but its a long way off and I didn't have my SLR and telephoto

Thinking its Canadian or European from the look. Maybe an LPD of some sort. Looks like it has a two tone paint job which makes me think European. Any ideas guys?

My guess is that's either the USS Arlington or USS San Antonio...both are homeported in Norfolk.

One of the class, the Somerset, was christened here in Philadelphia last year. A nice, modern-looking ship; it was quite a sight to see.
I would like to have seen Montana...

Yep...I thought the stern area looked a little long for the class I mentioned. Wrong-shaped bow too.
Not a bad guess though!

She's the Karel Doorman

Is that the same Admiral Doorman what led ABDAFLOAT against the Japanese in the battles for the Dutch East Indies?

Haha, Canada wishes it had a couple of these! In fact, this design was the original plan for replacing our AORs, but that's since been scaled back to a regular AOR, without the LPD capability, despite keeping the same project name (Joint Support Ship).

This ship is fantastic and I'm not only saying that because we did the hydrodynamics. :thumbs_up_1:
