Suggestions on modifying a hull

I'm trying to "accurize" the HobbyBoss USS Arizona's hull in 1/350 scale. According to several different plans the torpedo bulge or blister should be about 2 feet thicker. That works out to about 1/16". The first vertical band is basically done using 1/16 square stock to build it up. If I end up doing a waterline model, I'm good. I really would like to do a full hull and I'm not sure how to approach the lower curved bulge. I was thinking of using 1/32 inch strips running vertically ( I think it might take the form better) in two layers. Then of course sand and putty forever. Does anyone have any other ideas? There's the possibility of balsa wood strip. It's easier to sand and shape, but you'd still have to putty, seal, and sand forever! And then there's the softness of the wood, which will show dents, etc. too easily...maybe not such a good idea!
