Graf Spee 1:350 Academy

Post by biegacz90 »

Hi I'm a new user. I came from Poland so my english could be not perfect

I'm building the Graf Spee 1:350 Academy. I chose this paint scheme

Image

I found it in German Naval Camouflage, but I have a problem with color, because I don't know if I chose the right color. I prefer Tamiya so I chose this color

XF 53 - hull
XF 20 superstructure
XF 78 Deck
XF 79 Brown deck in a couple places
XF 27 Arado
Xf 63 or XF 24 the darker grey in a turret and the deck

Also I have a couple jar of Pactra so I want to use it like a A46 black (funnel ) A26 red (lower hull), A70 Polish blue and A33 Medium Green (arado)

I will be grateful if someone correct my color. I'm a beginner modelmaker so I don't chose the painting from december 39 because it is very demanding and too difficult for me

Graf Spee 1:350 Academy

Hi,

Welcome aboard!
Basicly your colors are correct. But I would slightly modify them. I would use Humbrol 147 for the superstructure and Tamiya XF 54 for the turrets and steel decks. Unfortunately I don't know how Pactra paints accurate are, but it seems the red is a bit shiny. I would use Tamiya XF 9. Or any kind of red can be good for the lower hull which is described as brick red or wine red.
If you had further questions please come to this forum or drop a mail.

OK
In my opinion XF 9 it is too dark, it is almost brown and I agree with you about Pactra A 26. It is too shiny. Probably I will mix vallejo dark red with vallejo flat red.

Hi,

Ok. But before mixing the reds, please take a look at the pictures in these articles:

That's why I offered XF-9. It is also good for WWII ships.

@ biegacz90 ~ Make sure the dark grey for the steel decks and the turret tops is NOT the same as it seems to appear in that cammo book. I also doubt that thing about grey painted teak...

Happy painting ~ Olaf!

It is very good question because at the end of summer 1939 graf spee swam in the Indian ocean and I haven't found any photos from these period. But probably you are right.
