color scheme of SOC seagull on CA-38 in Nov 42
In the process of ordering some WEM paints and thought that I would be able to find the paint scheme of the Curtiss SOC Seagull on the USS San Francisco in 42 on the internet. I was wrong... Any help would be appreciated

Re: color scheme of SOC seagull on CA-38 in Nov 42

While not specific to San Fran, this is the scheme her a/c would have worn at that time and place. Note that the prop tips are yellow/red/blue; a holdover from the prewar "yellow wings" markings. Flat finish, of course.
As to the number under the wings and on the fuselage, that would take a bit of research. Or, give a shout out to Dana Bell; he will likely have at his fingertips which unit's a/c were embarked on CA-38 at the time.

For a '42 era SOC, the colours were Blue Gray upper surfaces with Light Gray lowers. You could use FS 35164 and FS 36270 respectively as rough equivalents.JonSS202 wrote:In the process of ordering some WEM paints and thought that I would be able to find the paint scheme of the Curtiss SOC Seagull on the USS San Francisco in 42 on the internet. The pattern would be as per Quaestor's picture.
Hope that helps,
Mike.

Re: Calling all USS New Orleans class (CA) fans
Thank you both. I found a color scheme from a SOC on Portland labeled circa 1943 with the blue/gray verticle, light gray underside and the top of plane a darker blue, maybe Navy 5N? Not sure that it would have been applicable to Nov 13, 42 but trying to represent accurately...

Re: Calling all USS New Orleans class (CA) fans
For the 13th of November '42, Blue Gray/Light Gray would be correct. If I remember correctly, the three tone Sea Blue/Intermediate Blue uppers and White lowers scheme only came in use from mid-late 1943, well after the Guadalcanal Campaign.

Re: Calling all USS New Orleans class (CA) fans
Mike, you are correct.
Also, the "bars" would have been added to the roundels at that time. First white with a red outline to the entire insignia, several months later the white bars outlined with the same blue as the roundel itself.

Re: Calling all USS New Orleans class (CA) fans
Maybe someone here can help me sort out a problem with trying to get my USS San Francisco finished.
I bought a Five Star PE kit for the Trumpter 1/700 USS San Francisco.
It appears to have everything on the seven frets to do either a 1942 or 1944 USS San Francisco.
I am trying to build the 1942 USS SF.
But, in addition to failing to label less than half the parts for the 1944 version of the ship in the PE Instructions, they also fail to detail less than 1/5 of the 1942 version of the ship.
I managed to identify roughly another 1/5 of the parts for the 1942 USS SF, but the remainder of the parts remain a mystery.
Such as:
Do they include the splinter-shielding for the rear quad-1.1" mounts, and directors?
Which part is the detail on the face of the bridge (some sort of raised rim between the lower bridge/wheelhouse and upper bridge).
What is most of the A fret used for. Only about ten parts are mentioned in the instructions, yet it has over 40 parts?
What are about ? of the parts on the B and C frets?
Where do ALL of the ladders go? I have managed to locate precisely two of their locations (well, I know where the ladders are supposed to go, just not which ladders)
 Which hatches go where?
What are about of the parts on the E fret?
What are ALL of the parts on the G Fret?
Which short pieces of railing go where? Fortunately, I know what ALL of the bits on the F fret are (railings and ladders).
Not knowing what everything on a ship is (the various bits and pieces) does not help, as if I had a name for a part, I could simply Google it, and discover its location.
The PE kit does seem to be very complete. It just seems to lack adequate instructions.

It may help to post some high-rez scans of the parts so people who don't have the set can still try to decipher some answers for you.

Dear Friends:
I wonder if you can help me about USS Vincennes during Doolittles Raid, since i need to know the correct painting guide for her during this operations.
I havent see any pictures of her paint scheme in April 1942.
Thanks in advance

I have the scans of the frets, but I have not yet posted them, due to not knowing where the best place to post them would be.Timmy C wrote:It may help to post some high-rez scans of the parts so people who don't have the set can still try to decipher some answers for you.
I would prefer to have them where they would be of the most use to people.
And, I cannot decide if that would be:
- In this thread
- In the "Manufacturers and Suppliers" sub-Forum
- In the "Reviews" sub-forum, under the sub-sub-Forum for "Aftermarket/Detail kits"
So.... The scans are from the Five Star Instructions (since they were clearer than the scans I made of the actual frets, which were hard to make out components in some of them), and contain a scan of all six frets in the kit, and then the five frets which have the unidentified parts on them (The Fret of railings and ladders is the only fret that is completely identified).
I have the images as PDFs and as Word .docs.
I can also export the PDFs as a png, jpeg, or tiff (or any image format for that matter).
I just need to know where to put them so that I am not just shotgunning them all over the place.

Oh! And doesn't Niko Models make versions of the New Orleans-class ships that had the cut back deckhouse that exposed the Turret #2 Barbette (because of the forward turret being moved back several feet)?
That would seem to be the preferable choice over the Trumpeter Models for these.

Here is my interpretation on model built several years ago with some problems, e.g. the protection around the 5 in guns is too low.

I have used Vallejo 900 (Sea Blue 5-S), Vallejo 907 (Ozean Gray 5-O), Vallejo 993 (Haze Gray 5-H) and Vallejo 994 (Deck Blue 20-B). The last one is probably to dark. There were green stripes on her forward two 8 in turrets.

The Vincennes has a very different looking bridge than the others.
Some have a walkway around the upper bridge, where the Director and Rangefinder were (this doesn't seem to have the Rangefinder, which on some ships was on the walkway, and on others was on a saucer shaped platform on the front of the bridge).
Beautiful model, BTW. Pity she was sunk so early in her career.

The radar is not present in this photo, but the San Francisco carried an SC set in 1942, as did the rest of the ships in her class. At the time, she did not carry an SG set, which was a significant contributor to the confusion factor in her Nov 13, '42 battle off Guadalcanal. Callaghan was relying on data relayed via radio from the SG equipped ships, which kept him from formulating a clear picture of the situation quickly enough and caused fatal delays in reacting to it.
Only 6 CXAM sets were produced and not many more CXAM-1 sets were made. The "X" in the designator was for "experimental". The SC was supposed to be the "production" set. The CXAM series was heavy and a lighter alternative was sought. The SC had a smaller antenna but used higher power which was supposed to produce the same performance, but the result was not deemed adequate in combat. The later SK combined the larger antenna with the higher power and the resulting greater topweight was accepted as an operational necessity.

Re: 1942 USS San Francisco Forward Mast
I saw that photo, but you cannot see things like the TBS antenna, or the other antennae that were on that mast (there were at least three).
Navsource is the first place I check when looking for photos.
I remember seeing a drawing that detailed the different antennae locations, but I cannot now locate it.

All I've got is a close up of the mast around the navigation level (I'd have to dig for it) showing repairs following the big Guadalcanal battle and a couple of May 1942 scans:

That second photo is EXACTLY what I need.
I am trying to get the USS San Francisco Five Star Photo Etch Detail Kit sorted out, as well as get the mast correct on the model.
The PE kit contains all of the parts needed (save for really under a half-dozen or so for the 1942 outfit), but almost no instructions for what to do with them (such as not listing a single ladder's part number or placement - and then getting the photographic placement of what can be seen wrong on the hangar roof).
So, this gives me the information to correct several notations on my post in the Aftermarket parts/kits forum for the USS San Francisco Five Star PE kit, where I am trying to find the names and locations for about of the parts that Five Star doesn't list in their instructions (I think I have about ? to go, at this point, having identified 1/6th of the un-named/unlisted parts).
So.... Thank you very much.
I could still use photos of the Mainmast from 1942.
It seems to have some mounting or cap on top of the Mainmast, yet I cannot tell what it is, and thus cannot tell if the Five Star PE kit contains the part.
So, if you (or anyone else), have any photos of the mainmast, I would be grateful if you could please post said images/photos....

Re: 1942 USS San Francisco Forward Mast
I'm going to guess that if anything is mounted up there, it was the foundation for the SG radar. I don't think that she got an SG radar until after the November 1942 battle, but some ships were "partially" fitted for radar equipment during 1942 but didn't get the complete installation until later. Some of her sisters were noted as getting SC-1 (replacing the SC) and SG radars in August 1942 refits at Pearl Harbor.
I have a December 1942 photo of SAN FRANCISCO arriving at Pearl Harbor. But, I can't make out anything atop the mainmast.
