Revell 1/72 VIIC U-boat "U-82"

Hello everyone!
Want to say hello and to share a current project. I'm Scott, from Michigan. First timer here.
I'm just putting the finishing touches on a u-boat and diorama. The seascape is based on methods I studied from Chris Flodberg, who I must say is one of the finest ship modelers I've ever seen. He is also a very helpful guy and I cannot thank him enough for his guidance, and for blazing an amazing trail for people like me to follow.
I am mostly an AFV/tank guy (and an occasional sci fi model) but I always wanted to do a ship. My wife got me this big sub for Christmas last year and after seeing the work on this forum and Chris' work in particular I got really jazzed and decided to go for it.

The concept is a surfacing sub, which will require a lot of overspill near the stern. It's not quite done (deck spillage / flood ports aren't finalized) but I got it on the photo table the other night and thought I'd share. Let me know what you guys think! I appreciate it.

White for hull/conning tower: 5:1 mix Tamiya flat white xf-2, dk sea grey xf-54

Gray camo striping: 4:2:1 mix of Tamiya ocean grey xf-82, dk sea grey xf-54, film grey xf-22

Lower hull: Tamiya dk grey xf-24

Hull panel seam demarcation and rust: AIM products 110-3102 grimy black powder (pigment) applied over the paint with small brush

Hull panel highlights: white pastel powder

Wood deck staining: thinned AK Streaking Grime base coat, then thinned Testors flat black along edges, then AK Naval series AK 301 dk wash for wood decks for really dark accents

Lighter rust areas: AK Light Rust Wash

Rigging: black EZLINE, heavy

Rigging floats: Tamiya gunship grey and nato brown

Chipping: AK Chipping color 711

Larger scale subs are probably the perfect transition subject from AFV's. Now it's time for a 1/700 carrier�

Also was the flag on while submerged?

Personally I think it needs way more water. Also try using some clear silicone on the flaps in front to simulate dripping

Yes, definitely more water, and the sub needs to be not only wet, but dripping wet!

Yes it certainly should have lots as it's supposed to be surfacing. I agree!
I'll need to ponder how I might give the hull a wet look. I finished it with pigments and unfortunately if I apply a finish over it (satin varnish, etc) it alters the look or makes them almost disappear in some cases. I'll investigate!

when i use pigments i go overboard because of the same reason. When you apply the varnish most of it goes away. You can always add more later.
As for the water, i would place amounts of gloss varnish or gloss acrylic medium at the top and let it wash down, then repeat when dry, in certain areas to make it thicker. Just place it with a toothpick or dentist spatula.

Never. The flag needs to be removed and it would never be hoisted anywhere in the N. Atlantic--just at quayside or coming into port from a war patrol.
