Now that rigging is really to scale.
I wonder how you handle these ultra thin lines. They are extremely vulnerable.

Thank you all for your encouragement in the final stages of this rather protracted build...

The model is-apart from the R.M. Ensign on her aft flagstaff...( in the post! )

-as far as I know now completed --



I managed to complete the rigging without further incident or damage...

I dare not fiddle further ...as I will cause UN-rigging...


Thereafter I painted the sea -watercolour on enamel

- having a useful image shot from above as a guideline...

The to me somewhat surprising thing is...;how straight the demarcation line is of the white frothy boundary layer to the hull...

I tried to emulate the " feel " of the sea rtaher than try and capture a split second in time...

( my excuse for not observing well enough...?

- Sunshine and deep blue |Mediterranean sea--it never looks like this in the English channel....!!

The ship is now safely in her case--awaiting her Ensign!

It would certainly look even more outrageous- !--alas also somewhat cumbersome ...

-ergo I think as a visual object the 'plane would spoil the balance of her fine lines that are enhanced by that clipper bow


although it is of course the function of extending the catapult runway that was the reason for the clipper bow!!!

I probably would not have built Graudenz or any of her sisters had I not had my attention caught by that bow !!

Most photos show Ancona without the aircraft-- and I think I will keep her without the aircraft-
-as it now a graceful ship.

Yes, I would think the model would less elegant, but it would be an interesting detail. But it looks already very interesting now.

I am not even sure, what kind of aircraft his is. According to Wikipedia it is a Macchi M.7, probably M.7ter AR. Regia Marina's Carlo Mirabello contains an Macchi aircraft, which looks somehow similar - but I guess it is not the right one.

You could always have the aircraft positioned just a few centimeters ahead of the ship, as though it's just been launched. Would make for an interesting effect, I think, whilst still preserving the majesty of the overall look of the ship.

The last effort...

a few small bit of rigging were still added

and the flag (s)...

I was sent-- by fellow modelwarshipper Bento--( he of the STUNNING 1/400 scratch-build of Bremen)

some very crisply printed thin paper flags made by Tauro models.

Now the print quality on these is very good indeed-
- however when folded and glued ( Pritt) and even after compressing 'twixt smooth faced pliers--they remained just a bit too thick.


Concurrently fellow Modelwarshipper and fine modelmaker Rui Matos

had very kindly downloaded a Regia Marina Ensign and reduced to various sizes and sent to me as a pdf

Now the bug bear was/ is that my current printer is not of high enough quality to render a really good quality print on white decal sheet

Nevertheless it was pleasingly thin when viewed from above.

In addition--after my hefty creasing to give flutter effect , the paper version (despite being wrapped in tissue paper to protect the print--much of the pint was suffering rather

Now I can touch this up --and it would look fine-- but alas the flag retained a look of solidity when viewed from above

So... I shall be happy to fwd the pdf to anyone who has better printing facilities than I so as to make me a better Ensign !!

In the meantime I have used my decal Ensign--which is easily exchanged as it--thankfully is not flown from a gaff in-midst of all the mast rigging--phew

-- but I did use the Tauro print to copy some of the naval flags and reproduced these
myself using coloured pencils - back to back -- on the pleasingly thin Tauro paper.

In single layer the paper worked very well and had a pleasingly faded look.

So the model--now with the exception of a possibly yet to be exchanged Ensign--

is completed.--There is lots more that could have been doen I am sure-- but I am quite pleased with the end result now

Just a quick note to say that the artwork of the flags sent to Jim was not downloaded from the internet and scaled, it was done from scratch in vectorial mode, using Jim's reference

I'm new on this famous forum, and I'm very pleased to find you here ! (I understood you are one of its moderators, or even creators ?).
Since I discovered the pleasure of ship modelling, quite recently, you have been for me (like many), one of my main source of emulation. I cannot count how many of your excellent articles about your wonders I could read on some other internet places.
So, thank you a Lot ! and congratulations for your lovely models.

I just have one question about this forum.
I tried to find all your own posts here, I mean the ones that you opened yourself, but could'nt find how to do it ? Is it impossible to do ?
I remember I already got this problem when I found a link to the post of the last amazing diorama of Marijn Van Gils.
I also tried to find the original posts of some other of the best ship modelers, who surely must also be present here, but it seems that many have unfortunately registered under an avatar nickname.
