With still trying to figure out what to do with the boats I decided to work on other things. Good thing I did too. I almost forgot the funnel stays which would have been substantially harder to put on after the boats were installed.
The signal laps and binoculars on the bridge are installed. The bridge top and rest of the fore mast are waiting till I get the figures I ordered so I can have a few in the bridge area. I also got the fire fighting equipment, paravane, and crane installed on the main deck behind the bridge.
The rest of the main batteries are installed.
I wanted a break from the ship so I started on the water. The acrylic gel was laid down and the first layer of paint is on. I have MUCH more to do on this. What you see now is just started.
Here are the stretched sprue funnel stays colored with Black Smoke MiG pigment with a top coat of their pigment fixer over it. To me paint looks off. The MiG gives it a better feel, more like a cable than a painted one.
Thank you for looking, and please leave comments on your thoughts.

Very nice work! I love the work on the photo-etch in the top picture. Very crisp! I think she is coming along nicely. Keep it going!

Thanks Martin and Prowler.
Miniature Umpa Lumpas that I buy beer sauerkraut for do allege work for me. I just take the credit.
Seriously, a lot of time, swearing and I use Gator Grip for most of my PE so it allows me to continuously adjust it until I get it where I want it.

Re: IJN Nagara
This is killing me watching this while I wait to have the money to get the PE parts made for my new bridge for my Nagara (1/700 scale).
The differences in the kit and a few reference images I have make me worked though.
Such as the forward stack you have show the cross-section to be circular, while the reference images I have show that stack to be oval (although not nearly so much as the no. two and three stacks).
I am wondering how I am going to get the vanes inside the stacks to work. Do I 3D print them with the rest of the stack (save the PE)? Or do I add them as a separate PE part (I still have time to add them while waiting for the money to get the PE fret done)?

I have very limited IJN experience but have fought a few battles with boats, masts, stacks etc. I still say these IJN DDs/CAs/CLs/BBs/CVs have some highly complex and difficult items to duplicate compared to USN equivalents. This model seems to be typical in that regard.
If I tried to match the quality of your work on this model I would probably be in a nut house by now.
Superior work my friend. Or in USN terms, BRAVO ZULU. I look forward to seeing the end result.

Matt: I hate the waiting game too. FYI the pics I have seen of the Nagara specifically show the fore funnel fairly close to round to the point I do not think you would notice hardly any difference in scale.
Fred: Trying to match the quality of my work says the man who can best some of the most obnoxious resin kits I have ever personally laid eyes on. Either way Fred, I think both of us are already enroute to the nut house as it is:)
Thanks for the comments guys.

Thank you Bob and Dan.
I finally received my crew. So the rest of the fore mast will be attacked shortly.
I also emailed Flyhawk in hopes of an unlikely favorable response to their errors.

Re: IJN Nagara
Funny that you mention errors from Flyhawk.
The last three things I ordered from them had errors (forgot the barrels in a set of turrets; got the wrong fret in another set; and one of the frets was bent in another).
They said they are correcting it, but it was frustrating.

Black magic, voodoo, sacrificing of virgins, that type of thing. Only possible explanation. Can't be done by mortal hands alone.prowler0000 wrote:How the $%* did you get the PE foot-rails on the stacks to look so good?!!? Mine look..... well, nothing like that!!

Re: IJN Nagara
I have only done one hand-rail of a set of funnels for a 1/700 Nagara, but I run a length of Masking tape around the funnel where the hand-rail is supposed to go.
Then I slide the hand-rail down to the tape, and use a precision superglue tool I made from a styrene rod and a staple to dot superglue onto the connections.
But the other hand-rails only run halfway around the stack, so I am trying to figure out how to get the same trick to work.
I know that the masking tape will allow me to get the hand-rails lined up correctly. But getting them to stand at 90 to the stack is what is a quizzer.

Re: IJN Nagara
Thanks guys for the compliments. Here is how I did it.
First I use Gator Grip glue, glue looper, and helping hands.
The helping hands are clipped to the braces that go between the hull sides. I rotated the hand and ship 90 to one side.
Using the glue looper I put Gator Grip on each post of the rail. Then attached the rail to the funnel. I started at the bottom and worked up. The rails in this case sat directly above the plastic bumps. That gave me an easy guide to work with.
I would look at it from multiple angles to make sure it was to my liking.
I then rotated the ship and did the other side of the funnel paying close attention to not only what I did before but if each side were lining up with the other correctly.
Admittedly they would fall off, would not line up I would knock them off, I took too long and hard to remove the glue I was using only to add more and try again. This was several hours and lots of swearing with the occasional walking away. Hope that helps someone.

Flyhawk has gotten back to me and they are going to correct the boat issue as well as create PE for the Laura. Depending on how much time it takes them this build might end up stalled. But with the glacial pace I move at, maybe not:).
Here are the updates.
Funnel stay cables installed. I painted up some Fujimi figures and placed them inside the bridge. Created the glass on the bridge windows and put the top of the bridge on. I have also started the forward AA gun platform. Thanks for looking.

Correct the catapult shuttle position, added the rest of the windows, completed the foremast and finished the partially scratch built 13mm gun tub on the front of the bridge.

Boy, that forward superstructure was not aerodynamic, was it? Nice work, Gabriel.
