Requisitioned yachts

Post by finnfan »

OK, here goes with another obscure query. I have had heartening success here with earlier posts which seemed unlikely to attract an answer, so I live in hope.

I am interested to find pictures (or any other information such as builders or civilian owners) of two yachts requisitioned by the RN in WW2.

The first is Sylvana. Built in 1907. 487 tons. Used as a dan layer by the 7th minesweeping flotilla at Granton. A grainy picture of her appears on this site - http://www.grantonhistory.org/ships_and ... _01_10.htm but I would like to find something a little better either of her in service or in her civilian guise.

The other one is Sumar. Built 1926. 447 tons. My father took passage on her on his way to a posting in Bermuda in 1944 or 1945. She gets an uncomplimentary mention in "Yankee RN" by Cherry!

Thanks

How's this for Sumar?

Found on this thread.

Also this for Sylvana, ex-Maid of Honour. As well, not sure if you noticed, but there's a decent-sized silhouette shot of her on the page you linked to further down the page. And the IWM has this which shows some fairly good details. May be worth searching for her and Sumar on their site.

Many thanks for the quick reply. I have since found some good pictures and dimensions of Sumar in Motor Boating of 1927 which appears on-line. No results from a search for Sumar on the IWM site.

The link to the site about Sylvana/Maid of Honour is useful especially as it gives dimensions. I had almost given up on the IWM website a little while ago, but looking again now it has been much improved and not only did I find the picture of Sylvana which you mentioned, but also the drifter Clan Mackay which was another danlayer for the 7th minesweeping flotilla. You may have gathered that I am trying to collect background information on the 7th Flotilla with a view to making a diorama.

Best wishes
