Calling all Soviet Kirov-class (Киров) Project 26 (WWII) fans

Hi all

I just "discovered" the Soviet Pr. 26 light cruisers, I really love their look!

Pr. 26 Kirov and Voroshilov
Pr. 26bis Maxim Gorkiy and Molotov
Pr. 26bis2 Kaganovich and Kalinin

I ordered two kits (Voroshilov and Maxim Gorkiy) by Combrig which offers all six of them in different configurations, and wonder if anybody has built any of these kits.

Any suggestions concerning aftermarket items (barrels, photoetch etc.)?

Any interesting stories?

It's an old post Peter (2009) and GromoBoy's last post on Airbase was made in December 2012. So, unfortunately, it's impossible to answer your question.

Does anybody know what color the main decks of these ships were? I can find only 1 color picture of the main deck, (that pic is posted here) and it seems to be a kind of chocolate brown. I have Combrig's Maxim Gorky up next in the pile and I can't find any good pics of their decks, even in black & white. Did these ships have wooden decks? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

There is a large scale model of Kirov in the entrance hall of the Northern Fleet Museum in Murmansk. The decks appear to be a medium brown which might be similar to the colour of linoleum. The decks don't appear to be planked.

Thanks, finnfan, that helps a lot. There are very few pictures of these ships on the web that are NOT taken at sea level, and from a distance, so making out details such as deck color and material is a challenge. I was able to find one or two B&W pics that seem to show, as you said, a linoleum-like surface. It clearly doesn't look like wood, and the Combrig kit does not have planking scribed into the deck. Their Sverdlov kit, however, does have planking scribed, so I am assuming that class of ships had a wooden deck?

According to the photos in the Volume 24 2011 by Gangut about the Project 68K (Chapayev class), the decks were steel or with linoleum on them.

According to the instructions by Combrig for their Frunze kit, the decks were either brown (linoleum) or dark grey (steel).

I.e. no wooding planking on this class.

Thanks, I will use Linoleum for Chapayev then. Regarding colour schemes, What should be used?

But don't know what to choose, though I do know the SN ships tended to have a bluish scheme rather the standard grey or grey variants of other navies!

Do we know when was the SN adopted the orange deck paint so unique to their Navy? (As seen on the Kirovs, Slavas, Sovremennys etc? )
