Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
I am not exactly sure if this design should have been the one chosen for modernising the ships. I think it is very nice and wish to build it in 1/350

Yep, very handsome design. It looks like Nagato between turrets 2 and 3, with Yamato's funnel grafted on

Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
The thing is that the funnel is too Yamatoish and the turrets are identical to IJN Nagato class.
IJN Amagi and IJN Tosa had different turret design. Causeshe would have used a different gun, the L/50 gun instead of L/45(Nagato's gun).

Really? The Wikipedia says that she had the same gun type of those on the Nagatos; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amagi-class_battlecruiser

Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
The funnels are not really fitted well into the ship, isn't it? I know it is quite rare for any other ships other than the Yamatos to have that kind of funnel. From what I know, there is another class of battlecruiser (or cruiser) that had that kind of funnel (plus its main guns and deck shape that very resembling the Yamatos much more than the Amagi; the IJN B65 class cruiser, which I think it would have been a very handsome ship, with 12 inch main guns that had never been used on any ship:

From this, the IJN might have drawn the design for the Amagi similar to this one. But they were in dark times by the last years of war, so the design of previous ships did not really followed up the Yamatos, except for the B65 and here the Amagi. The Amagi should have followed the similar design like in WoWs, if the war extended longer than 1945 (which would have given more time for navies to modernise/modify, draw new designs and construct more powerful ships. But then the war would have been too serious and fights would become much more intense, with Nazi (H class of the plan z) and Japan (with Amagi, B65, A-150 bbs, A-140 bbs, etcetera...) and British Lion class and American Montana class. The Soviet Sovetsky, Kronshtadt, Stalingrad, etc. The more destructions would have come!

Aop.

Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
Oh well, sorry that was a bit unclear. I was saying that those 9 310mm (12.2in)/50caliber were used only on that class of ship:) (the gun type was a new design the japenese made, cause normally, most ships of different classes tended to be fitted with the same kinds, like the nagatos and amagis.)

Wikipedia is not always a trusty source but in the IJN Tosa article on Wikipedia correctly mention that they would have used the L/50 gun instead of the IJN Nagato's gun(L/45).Aop Aur wrote:Really? Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
So how would the shape of the turret differed from the Nagato? Or it just had greater inch barrels.

The inches are the same L/45 and L/50 are the same inches guns 40 inch.
The shape of the turret roof would be greatly different from those of the IJN Nagato class. That was the case of all turrets in the Japanese navy. Same inches guns have different turret deisgn, for example IJN Kongo and IJN Ise class.

Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
The Nagato class also had the main guns modified, aren't they? I saw photos of the 1910s and 1941; the turrets' roofs were modified. As here the Mutsu in the picture:

Here is a crop view showing the turrets of the Fujimi 1/700 amagi (Kostas Katseas build):
I think the turrets are identical (from my eyes), which the Nagatos then modified into the ones we all know. So I think there may be some chances that the Amagi would came out the same modification of the turrets. I am not sure the Fujimi got the turrets right, but anyway...

When the Nagatos were refit in the mid 1930s, they upgraded to the turrets from the unused Tosa/Kaga. Higher elevation for greater range. Same barrels, though, IIRC.

Re: Calling all IJN Tosa & Amagi Fans!
So, would that be the case that the Amagi would have had the same upgrade?

Well if the Tosa had those kind, then the Amagi would also had the same.Dan K wrote:When the Nagatos were refit in the mid 1930s, they upgraded to the turrets from the unused Tosa/Kaga. Higher elevation for greater range. Same barrels, though, IIRC.
