I did have this pic already, but it is an important one indeed.
Funnily, I printed this exact pic yesterday evening! The reason: it shows the wooden structure on the island (left on the photo), which I'm about to build, by far the most clearly from this side.
But it is also a great photo to define the angle of the ship, and shows some good details too.

I was just reading a book about Mogami and Ise/Huyga by Langerer/Trojca. In the book they claim that the flight decks in these ships were painted with a mixture of iron oxide (rust) and "resin". So if you paint a faded camo darkish Brown color might be good as a base color underneath.

I haven't been very active over the last months, but at least I finished construction of the island and all associated details. I only have to add a small pier at the end of the railroad after the water has been done, and add some bumpers and hooks to the railcar.
The railroad and railcar, wooden crates, barrels, GMC truck, Dodge jeep and small trailer all come from 5star sets, which are all really great. The rest is scratchbuilt.







Please excuse the black smudges around the window frames. I painted the inside black before adding the roof:








The roof of the GMC's cab will be folded down after I paint the interior.



And the obligatory giant match! The bicycle comes from an older small Eduard figure set (thanks Joeri!)

Even in its raw, unpainted splendor, this project has all the hallmarks of being something truly spectacular, especially given your known abilities in small-scale painting and weathering, Marijn. You're setting the bar that all modellers will one day aspire to...especially in such a tiny scale!

The scaffolding is scratchbuilt after the historic photo's, using brass wire and plastic sheet. It is actually simpler to do than the result makes one think. I first 'planted' all vertical beams in holes I drilled in the ground, then added all horizontal beams. After that the oblique beams followed, and finally the plank floors (engraved plastic sheet with the edges carved to make it look like individual planks).

The basic height of the island was built up with a couple of layers of plastic sheet. Then I added a layer of Magic Sculp putty to get close to the actual slightly undulating relief. The 'soil' is a thin layer of a mixture of wood glue and ceramic plaster (just the dry powder, no water), in which varying amounts of grit (dried and ground ceramic plaster) was mixed to get a lumpy and textured paste. Loose debris was strewn on top of this and fixed withwatered down wood glue.

Hello Marijn,

Happy to find you here (I'm quite new here) !
It is so interesting to follow such building threads. I already learnt a lot from this one, and was especially interested by the "Sugar dog" building, because I wanted to do some kind of similar Japanese "civilian/army" boats for a next diorama. It will help me a lot ! Also the tip of Jim Baumann to shape the masts.

First, when I discovered this new project from you, after your amazing last diorama with the "Lady Lex" (one of my very favourite dioramas, with the "Passchendaele" of Per Olav Lund. Thanks again for your excellent AK book on it), I was a little bit disappointed.
But finally, now, after I read and saw the photos, I really enjoy it.
I also feel some emotion like you at this "perfect symbolic and sad image of the fall of the once mighty Imperial Japan"
Very good idea, and excellent work in progress.
So emulating !
I come back to my WIP (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=161399) with still more motivation !...
