As tensions continue to rise drastically throughout the wider Middle East, Turkey has announced construction plans for a multipurpose aircraft carrier, The Daily Beast reports.

The carrier, named the Anadolu after Turkeys Anatolia region, will be approximately 740 feet long and is slated to enter service in 2021.

As the carrier is designed for multipurpose missions, it will be able to transport tanks, landing vessels, helicopters, soldiers, and aircraft, according to TDB.

Costing over $1 billion, the carrier will drastically alter Ankaras ability to project power beyond its borders.

I don't recognize the aircraft. They will need to purchase F-35Bs presumably, in order to operate fixed wings from it.

The aircraft on the model are the -35Bs - the lighting washes out the tailplanes, that's all.

Thanks Timmy, the nose of the plane at the stern also looks different though?

The deck-edge netting on the far side of the plane is blending with the nose, changing the latter's silhouette.

I had assumed the F-35s would have been A-models, but look like it will be a mix of F-35A and B's.

Recent article on an additional F-35 purchase:

But no breakdown of what the aircraft models will be. It had been assumed the F-35As would replace the many F-16s that Turkey flies. They are a big F-16 operator.

They can't operate F-35As from the ships so it makes sense to have some Bs.

Turkey being kicked out of the F35 program for taking the S300 SAM delivery from Russia essentially means their new Juan Carlos class LHD won't have F35s:

Turkey now has a carrier without jets

Turkey had intended to operate F-35Bs from its new assault ship, that cant happen now.
The TCG Anadolu is based on the Spanish ship Juan Carlos I, a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship. Navantia provided design, technology transfer, equipment and technical assistance to Sedef Shipyard of Turkey for the design and development of the Anadolu.
From the start of the Turkish amphibious assault ship programme, the Turkish Navy had wanted a vessel purely designed to operate helicopters. However, local media reported that soon after exploring options for the design, the Turkish Navy later changed its plans and opted for a fully equipped flight deck with a ski-jump ramp in front, intending to purchase the F-35B STOVL aircraft.
Turkish national newspaper, Hurriyet Daily News, reported at the start of the year that the country was planning to buy a number of F-35B jets in addition to its plus 100 F-35As, the paper stated that this was planned to be procured in line with Ankaras growing interest in strengthening its naval forces, mainly for overseas operations, the vessel theyd fly from is the TCG Anadolu.

So this ship will now be a drone carrier?

Defense News

Turkey plans to deploy attack drones from its amphibious assault ship
By: Tayfun Ozberk ? 1 day ago

MERSIN, Turkey The Turkish government hopes to transform its landing helicopter dock Anadolu into a carrier ship for attack drones, and has already begun tests to see if the dock ship is strong enough for the mission.
When the United States removed Turkey from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter project after it purchased the s S-400 air defense system from Russia, the Turkish Navy lost the capability to launch a fixed-wing aircraft from Anadolu.
To give UAVs takeoff-and-land[ing] ability on aircraft carriers, their structure must be strong because they are subjected to very high G-shocks. We aim to develop a new [unmanned combat aerial vehicle] UCAV that will successfully land and take off on LHD Anadolu in one year, the CEO of drone-maker Baykar, Haluk Bayraktar, said during an recent interview.
Ismail Demir, the governments president of defense industries, said companies have been working on the Baykar-made Bayraktar TB2 and other unmanned fixed-wing projects to turn Anadolu into a drone carrier.
