It is possible the poster with the data last time this came up was William Smallshaw (Scale Shipyard?). Going to be close to 36'. Hank Strub has a copy of Dick Langraff's book, which discusses much of the 80's mods. Might be some info in there.

Calling all Iowa fans FDD's Hull Line Drawing

Post by lgmccauley »

I have been carving the Missouri hull this past week using the 1/192 Hull Line drawing from FFD as my guide. I discovered that the sheer line on this drawing is about a 1/4" too high from what it should be. I emailed Tom Walkowiak and we think it might be due to reductions in copying the plan, which he says was from the original mold loft drawings in 1/48 scale. Tom's set of TFW plans show the correct height. Fortunately I'll be able to correct what I have done so far.

I thought his name was Lee Upshaw, (also worked at the Long Beach Naval shipyard on the New Jersey and Missouri reactivation and upgrading program) in addition to owning the scale shipyard?

Very well could be the very same person - at least, that's my take on this; I've thought so all along.

It was Lee Upshaw from the Scale Shipyard.
Here is copy of his post:

Hi:
The boot top on the Iowa class battleships is indeed wider at the bow then it is at the stern.
I just pulled the Draft Marks and Boot Topping drawings for BB-61 class out of my files here. This drawing is signed off on 8-18-1941 with revisions to Jun-6-1944.

The boot top is specified as Design waterline at 34'-9 1/4" with the boot topping at the bow being 5'-6 1/2 below this line and 17" above this lone for a total of 6'-11 1/2" in width top to bottom.
At the stern it is 12 1/2" below this line and 17" above the design W.L. for a total of 29 1/2" width top to bottom.

The above data is for BB-61 & BB-62
For BB-63 through BB-66 the top of the boot top was to be at 38' 2 1/4" which would put the design W.L at 36'-9 1/4" as the boot top is typically 17" above D.W.L. on battleships. The data for BB-63 -66 was added on Jul-29-1943

I think he was inquiring as to the boot top circa 1990 or so? Pretty interesting info though!

Lee Upshaw would be your guy. We are different people, I know because I have met Lee in the past :-)

Okay gents, here's what I observed about Wisky's draft markings today and their relation to the top of the boot.

Read from the starboard side she's currently drawing:

Bow: 24'
Amidships: 29'
Stern: 33'

The boot topping is drawn:

Bow: Through the middle of the 7 in 37'
Amidships: Through the middle of the 7 in 37'
Stern: In between the 6 and 7 for 36' and 37'

The max levels painted in the draft markings:

Bow: 38'
Amidships: 39'
Stern: 40'

I couldn't get photos today but I'll try again tomorrow. The plans from 1988 still indicate the DWL is 36' 9 1/4". I spent 2 hours this morning rooting through blueprints and file folders but I couldn't find a boot striping diagram. We have oodles though and it'll take longer to go through it all and organize them all. Something to be done in the future.

I set the top of my boot topping at about 35' - 36', and the lower edge of the topping about 6' feet lower than that at the stern, and about 10' lower at the bow, struck some straight lines between those points, and painted the topping. From the given info and looking at photos, that appears to be close enough for 1/350 scale.

On a completely unrelated matter, am I correct in my memory is that when the ships were modernized in the 1980s, the CEC was located into the old admirals cabin on the 02 level on the Iowa, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, but moved to the 03 level on the Missouri so they could level Admiral Halsey's cabin intact?

Negative. The CEC is on the 02 Level (02-87-0-C) where the old Flag Cabin used to be. The whole complex was gutted and made the CEC and SSES. The equipment layout and location of SSES within the CEC is however different on the four sisters. Seems the layout was changed each time they brought one back and from looking at the layout drawings for BB-64 at least there were 3 different layout changes from 1988-1991. Minor changes but changes none the less due to relocations and additions.

On BB-64 they made a new Flag Cabin (01-89-2-L) below one Level opposite the CO's In Port Cabin (01-89-1-L) and doubled the size of the CO's Galley by expanding into the stateroom that was forward of it (formerly 01-91-2-L). To the best of my knowledge this was only done to BB-64 as there was an exterior door with a light lock added to the port side 01 directly opposite the one that goes into the CO's Cabin. There is no door on the port side on any of the other sisters.

If you guys would like I can post photos of the requisite areas of BB-64's plans.

Ok. The cross section drawing for the 1991 Missouri in Stillwell's book shows the CEC on the 03 level and the 02 flag cabin as still being in place, and I recall there being text in the book about making accommodations during the reactivation/refit to keep the flag cabin intact because it was Admiral Halsey's. This drawing and info in the book must be in error then....

Only reference I've heard of a Flag Cabin being preserved was on the New Jersey and only during the Vietnam reactivation. I've been in Mo's CEC and its in the same location as Wisky just laid out differently. It can't be on the 03. I'm looking at that Inboard Profile in Stillwell's book, it's a typo.

I think I finally have my set of waterlines and frames done. These came off the original table of offsets. Then I faired the lines to get rid of obvious defects. It was a very time consuming process that was done on Amtrak rides.

Waterlines are green, frames are blue, straight lines are cyan, outline is red.

Next I have to clean up the tunnel (mostly done), add in the shaft bossing, add the keel, bilge keel, and add the hawse pipe openings. However, I think I have the bok work done.

Would the award banners that were applied to either side of the bridge commemorating actions in the gulf war, and the markings applied to the 16 inch turrets signifying the number of rounds and targets that each turret fired on during the war have been applied well the ship was still at sea and in the war zone, or after she returned to homeport and the dark gray hull numbers were redone with the standard shadowed white? Tamiya provides decals for them, but doesn't specify to actually apply them to the model well specifying the dark gray hull numbers. I've applied the dark gray numbers to my model as I am going for the "in-combat-theater" appearance for my model, but the extra markings would dress her up even more, if it would be technically correct to apply them.

The ribbons awarded to the ship that are located on either side of the bridge are there permanently, only removed during decommissioning. They are updated when the ship receives new commendations. I don't know of any scorecards that are painted on the sides of turrets, mounts, or bridge today as they were in WWII. The Battle Efficiency "E" for weapons, engineering, navigation, etc. departments are displayed for a year if the ship is so awarded. The Engineering E is red, the Weapons and Nav. department E's are white, if I'm not mistaken.

Hope this helps,

Hank

Missouri's ribbon board is currently on what appears to be a 4'x8' sheet of plywood or some such, bolted to each bridge wing. She does currently carry both white and red "E" for efficiency, what the historical time applicability of those is not known to me. Pearl Harbor day, 1991, she did carry some sort of "victory" symbols or battle stars on the after bridge wings. Check out Stillwell, Missouri, p 334. For a rounds fired there is a photo on p 326 of a 289 rounds fired in Kuwait symbol, looks like stbd front side of a turret (one?) That art work is no longer on the ship.

The markings on the turrets were on each turret both port & starboard, as are the bright colorful square award ribbons on either side of the bridge bulwarks just before where the windows begin. They are visible on the footage of the ship in Bremerton while in mothballs, on history of the USS Missouri DVD.

What I would like to know is were these ribbons and markings applied well the ship was still in the war zone or on her way home from the war zone, well she still was wearing the dark gray shadowed hull numbers, or if they were applied after she returned to port and the hull numbers were switched back to the white.
