Ok, so leaving those banners and markings off would be correct if she's being portrayed as still in the Gulf War Theater.

In the famous double UNREP photo of BB-63, 64 and AOE-1 taken in 1991 in the Gulf, both BBs still have their ribbon boards and awards painted on the bridge wings and BB-63 has the subdued hull numbers. Not sure when exactly the photo was taken though, IE prior to or after hostilities.

The site lists it as Aug 8th 1991 but the war was over and the BBs were long home by then so that's in error. All other photos from that series are dated the same so...

Sometimes that date listed is when the photo was received, not shot so... Anyone know?

This shot is of BB-64 firing one of her TLAMs on 1/18/1991 and you can still see her ribbon boards displayed.

Unless you can find a shot BB-63 in theater during the War all you can do is speculate but at least BB-64 still carried them throughout the deployment.

In the underway replenishment photo, after blowing it up as much as my iPad will allow, I don't see The markings on the sides of the turrets showing the number of shells fired and targets fired at (which would still show up as black specs in the photo even from that distance). I still can't tell if the colorful square ribbon markings are present on the bridge or not, but I'm going to guess that it is not. It must have been awarded to the ship after she returned to homeport, for her gulf war service. All of the other markings along the side of the bridge that I know where there are visible in the photo, and are applied to my model.

Finally found the time to go and tour the USS Iowa for the first time.

The opening through the superstructure caught me as quite interesting and I am wondering if I
should try to scratch it into my USS Missouri build. The BGP shows a similar arrangement for the Missouri.

This an intake for the boilers. Every one of these special items you can add to your model make it more interesting and distinct!

Note the angled communications tubes on either side for the Mk 37 directors.

Totally agree with you Fliger747 about modeling to aim for interesting and distinct.

Pictures online are wonderful references and the BGP is good for, well, general layout of the ship.
But to actually be onboard one of the class is inspirational and just down right amazing.

The ships have all become even more different with time. depending on the time you are portraying, the modern ship may or may not be a good reference. Many things are the same, many are not.
