DKM Scharnhorst 1940

Hello everyone, I need help with this particular paint scheme.
Just a list of the RAL colors used. The build is the Tamiya 1/700 kit.
I pretty much use Vallejo paint now so the choices are all there in model color/air.

I really appreciate the help.

Hello Roger,

As far as I know Scharnhorst had no real camo until december 1940. She was painted to hellgrau and only the color of the turret tops were changed. So, I offer vallejo model color 989 or model air 50 for this grey.

Hey man thanks.
I am settling on what I think is called the 50/51 scheme.
Although I have lurked here for a couple years I am very new to ship modeling and the paint schemes of WW1 and WW2.
Now if it was a FW 190 I would know the colors in my sleep...

I'm having a lot of fun doing this btw. A refreshing change.

You are welcome and don't worry. German naval camouflage is simple like the camo of a Focke-Wulf

So, if you want that camo for your Scharnhorst, then try this for the hull: model air 49 and this for the superstructure: model color 907 or model air 46. But these were the peacetime colors, so you will have a 1939/40 ship. Because in the spring of '40 these colors were repainted to that light grey what I wrote about.

What about the steel decks? RAL 7021?
I think in model air its Panzer schwartzgrau 56. I have a ton of model air / model color and I love the stuff.

But in 1940 I'm going for model air 50 for the hull and upper surfaces right?
Lots of stuff online is questionable or ficticious...I need books!

Not exactly model air 56. RAL 7021 is rather model color 995 or model air 54. If you want to model a Scharnhorst between March-September 1940 then you can use model air 50, as I wrote. At least my sources show one light gray color. But if you want a more exact source, let me offer this book to your attention:

I get it, My book budget is blown!
Plus I just got another Bismarck book as well.

I am grateful for your help man.
That old Scharnhorst kit is giving me quite enough grief without sweating colors (which is supposed to be the fun part)
And I am not used to having a model that it equally brush and airbrush painted LOL!

I was laughing with my wife's uncle about how at 1/700 we could just brush paint.

Hello Roger ~ If you have a ton of paint jars, just pick four shades of grey, each easy to be distinguished from each other. One very light grey, one medium grey with a hint of blue, one darker grey (optional, see below), and very, very dark grey.

You need a very, very light grey for the superstructure (RAL 7001), such as Vallejo #155 (70.990). The next darker should be RAL 7000 for the hull, such as Vallejo 71.120. The next darkest, for optional dark grey turret tops, is RAL 7024, should be Vallejo 994. The darkest you need, for the steel decks and the boot-topping, is RAL 7016. Could be Vallejo 71.115.

If you don't have them at home, just take what looks good to you. Again:
very, very light grey
medium grey
dark grey
very, very dark grey...

And if you want to apply a Baltic camo (just in case), you need white and black. If you apply scale effect, swap these with an even lighter grey than above and an even even darker grey than above (so six grey tones in total) ...

No need to buy books with doubtful information in them. It's all written somewhere here, maybe not translated into "Vallejo", but it's here...
