Model Monkey Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet islands ('42)
We're pleased to announce two separate designs for accurate 3D-printed islands for USS Yorktown CV-5 and USS Enterprise CV-6 as they appeared at the Battle of Midway are complete. [edit: Hornet CV-8 is now available, too!]
They are available now in 1/487 scale for your Revell Yorktown class aircraft carrier models, including the recently produced "Battle of Midway Carrier" kit. They will be made available in 1/350 for your Trumpeter Hornet kit and later in 1/700 (for Trumpeter, SkyWave/Pit-Road, Mini Hobby Models and HP-Models), 1/719 scales (for Tamiya) and 1/600 for classic Aurora. [edit: 1/719, 1/700 and 1/600 Yorktown and Enterprise islands are now available, too.]

USS Yorktown:
USS Enterprise:
An accurate island for sistership USS Hornet CV-8 is being designed and will be made available separately in the near future.
Scale: the box of the Revell kits is sometimes erroneously labeled as 1/542 scale , 1/400 scale, 1/490 scale or 1/480 scale. The true scale of the model kit, when compared to measurements drawn on official US Navy blueprints of the actual ship, is 1/487 scale, This island is precisely scaled for your Revell kit.
- Revell USS Yorktown CV-5 (# H-383, 5224 and 85-3017)
- Revell USS Enterprise CV-6 The "Big E" (# H-378)
- Revell USS Hornet CV-8 (# H-376 and 5223)
- Revell Battle of Midway Carrier (# 05014)
Features:
- fully assembled
- overall dimensions accurately scaled from official US Navy plans drawn by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, dated 1940
- details specific to USS Yorktown confirmed by careful study of builders plans, the builders model, period photographs of the real ship and photos of the wreck
- details specific to USS Enterprise confirmed by careful study of builders plans and period photographs of the real ship
- open Pilot House windows
- open Fighting Top windows
- for Yorktown, open Primary Flight Control "PriFly" windows
- for Enterprise, open Primary Flight Control "PriFly" windows and open Secondary Flight Control windows
- open Battle Lookouts, aka "Vision Slits"
- open doors, ready for your favorite photo-etch (not included)
- accurately shaped decks
- accurately shaped splinter shielding and Pilot House sky lookout position shape unique to Yorktown
- properly shaped funnel cap with exterior piping detail
- properly sized and located 16" and 12" diameter portholes with rigol ("eyebrow") detail
- properly scale smokepipes passing through the entire island - forward smokepipe at the correct slope
- for Yorktown, a weather shelter
- heavy structural deck support details (light supports omitted, ready for your favorite photo-etch)
- aft cutout for crane
To fit this island to your Revell kit's flight deck, please remove the raised locator strips on the Revell kit's flight deck part #43. A simple cuticle cutter can cleanly and easily remove these raised locator features.
The Classic Warships Publishing USS Yorktown book is a highly recommended reference to help with your model.
As with any first-time product release, a Shapeways print engineer may decide some feature may be too thin to survive the cleaning process and cancel the first order, refunding your money. If that happens, NO WORRIES, Shapeways will immediately notify me and I'll adjust the product design later this week and make it available for reordering.
Some part cleanup will be necessary. The 3D printing process uses a waxy substance to support certain part features. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners. Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.
During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light. Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured. Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin.
Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended. Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 islands (
Any plans in doing them in 1/200 for the Merit Hornet Kit since it appears that they are not going to produce a 1/200 Enterprise after all?

Aye, Cap'n! A corrected Hornet pilot house, too.Gunner82 wrote:Any plans in doing them in 1/200 for the Merit Hornet Kit since it appears that they are not going to produce a 1/200 Enterprise after all?
Please be advised, as the scale increases, the cost skyrockets. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about that. It happens because the product's cost is primarily due to the amount of material extruded by the printer. For example, to rescale a 1/700 design by doubling it to 1/350, the cost can actually go up 8 times. This is because the amount of material extruded is doubled in all three dimensions ( 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 ).
A whole 3D-printed island in 1/200 scale could cost about $400!
So, the better plan may be to offer only certain features (pilot house, etc.) to be added to the basic Merit island. I can make those features available. They will be designed to match the dimensions of the actual ship, not the Merit kit, so some adjustment will be needed for best fit.
Please let me know if that works for you and which features you want.
I'll be away for a couple days but I'll check back in on Wednesday.
Have fun, Monkey around. TM

Regarding the Hornet island, put me down for a complete unit in 1/200. That way there can be no misalignment or fudging of parts. My checkbook awaits............Gene.

This is because volume is a cube of the scale.ModelMonkey wrote:Aye, Cap'n! A corrected Hornet pilot house, too.Gunner82 wrote:Any plans in doing them in 1/200 for the Merit Hornet Kit since it appears that they are not going to produce a 1/200 Enterprise after all?

Scale 2x, then the volume is 2^3 (8).
Scale 3x, then the volume is 3^3 (27).
Scale 4x, then the volume is 4^3 (64). and 5x (125), 6x (216), and so on...

While you've got that checkbook open, maybe you could get them to throw in a miniature version as a "prize" - say 1/350th HORNET. I know your wife wouldn't mind.
Great work Steve. Some of us thought the YORKTOWN class in larger than 1/700 might not ever come, then we got the Trump SS ESSO HORNET in 2001 and we were of mixed feelings. Now, it is getting into the realm of truly state of the art representations of all three ships in 350th and larger - and smaller!
Some might swallow a bit hard on the cost, but I have spent big money on resin kits and still didn't get the accuracy one would expect for that money. (Some of the resin kits were really good, of course, but still required the replacement of the white metal detail parts with aftermarket ones anyway.)
Some people make you happy, then they leave.
Others make you happy when they leave. (apologies to Oscar Wilde if he ever said anything similar, of which there is some doubt . . .)

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 islands (
Thanks, fellas!
Just got back from being away for a couple days. I'll rescale these designs for Tamiya, Pit-Road and Trumpeter then get to work on Hornet.
Thanks for the brilliant 2D builders plans. The design for Hornet is going to rock.
Then, Lexington class funnels or Martin might send the Irish mafia out after me.
Please keep your eyes open for any late-war Big E plans. I'd like to offer that island, too.

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 islands (
1/719 Yorktown for your Tamiya 1/700 kits is ready.
Recommended island to build USS Yorktown from:
- Tamiya USS Yorktown CV-5 (# 31712)
- Tamiya USS Enterprise CV-6 (# 77514)
- Tamiya USS Hornet CV-8 (# 77510)
Scale: the box of these kits is erroneously labeled as 1/700 scale. The true scale of the model kit, when compared to measurements drawn on official US Navy blueprints of the actual ship, is 1/719 scale, This island is precisely scaled for your Tamiya kit.
This island is not suitable for Trumpeter or Pit-Road 1/700 scale kits; it is scaled too small.

- HP-Models 1/700 scale USS Hornet CV-8
- Mini Hobby Models 1/700 scale USS Hornet CV-8 (# 80901)
- Pit-Road / SkyWave 1/700 scale USS Hornet CV-8 (# W-169)
- Trumpeter 1/700 scale USS Hornet CV-8 (# 05727)
These designs are not intended for the Tamiya 1/700 scale kits, which are actually 1/719 scale (2.7% smaller). Islands specifically scaled for the Tamiya kits are available separately.

Thanks, Abram!
1/700 Big E needed a tweak to help Shapeways print it without breakage. It is ready, now.
It is also available now in 1/600 for the classic Aurora Enterprise kits that may be in your stash.

1/350 scale designs are ready to help convert your Trumpeter 1/350 scale USS Hornet CV-8 to either of her sisters.
The designs have been updated to include delicate exterior electrical cabling and drain pipes.

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 islands (
Steve, I stand in awe of the line of products that you have presented to the ship modeling world in what is truly a short time. I have definitely purchased several of your products and can only pronounce myself totally satisfied with each and every item. I'm amazed at the technology you have at your disposal. I've commented that being a ship modeler at the time of the advent of 3-D printing must be very much like what it was like to be in the hobby in a serious way when photo etch made its first appearances. But, as time goes by and you and others in your industry continue to offer an ever expanding variety of accessories with which we can accurize and dress up our builds, I have come to the conclusion that this was an understatement. 3-D printing promises to ultimately, as the technology evolves, offer an order of magnitude more goodies for us than PE, which make no mistake, will still have its place, can possibly offer given the nature of the material.
Sorry to waste everybody's time with this monologue but I have just been blown away by what we are now being offered and the possibilities for the future.
Bob M.

Hello Steve,
Just to let you know, I tried to buy the CV-5 and CV-6 islands in 1/700 (for Trumpeter) and I got a notification from Shapeways that says "Unfortunately, we are unable to manufacture one of the products in order #xxxxxxx". Both products could not be printed (or so they claim).
