Calling all Tarawa-class (LHA) & Wasp-class (LHD) fans

It's an off-white of some kind. Same or similar color is used in LPD well decks and I believe has something to do with vehicle/LCAC exhaust, but I haven't seen any sort of paint chip for it.

SAN DIEGO � The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu returns to Naval Base San Diego this week from its final deployment.

A Navy statement says the ship will arrive in port on Dec. 24 after six months in the western Pacific and will be decommissioned in March.

USS Peleliu has been in service for 34 years, made 17 deployments and traveled more than a million miles.

The last Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, it was named for a World War II battle

I am embarking upon the beautiful 1/350 Wasp kit, and hopefully wont embarrass myself in the process. In my research, I've found lots of great ideas that I want to incorporate into my build. The one that is currently striking my fancy is the large "1" registration mark on the island. I've seen lots of CNVs in pictures with the outlines of their registration numbers lit, and was wondering if anyone can tell me if the Wasp is the same way?

I've noticed in various pics of the port and starboard embarkation/debarkation door areas that there appears to be some type of extendable crane system at the top of the entrance. At least.......I think it's an extendable crane type system? Am I correct in assuming this would be used to on load or off load cargo and other materials to/from smaller boats docked alongside the LHD? I can't seem to find any pics on the Net of such a system in use.

I was looking the other day.. According to ray's new cd's on LHD'S it appears the aft ram is no longer on service?
I planning on doing the BHR in 2003 Waterlined with a deck full of harriers.. found this great photo showing that.

Looking at the new LHD DVD from Ray Bean. It appears that the forward CIWS has been moved to atop of the bridge. Also it appears that some of the LHD's still have the aft RAM System as well as new LHA-6 America. I am planning on doing the BHR in 2003 with harriers, few support Helicopters (UH-1N, SH-60's) and few cobra's.

As for the CIWS on the LHD's... LHD 1-4 have the CIWS on a platform in front of the Bridge. LHD 5-8 have the CIWS on top of the Island. As does the new LHA Class(LHA 6-7)... You will also notice that LHD 1-4 have mostly square windows on the Bridge. Where LHD 5-8 have rectangle windows on the Bridge...

Not sure if this is in the wrong section,this seems the closest in any case. Has anyone out there considered converting or kit bashing a Wasp kit into the America or Makin Island? Thought I might give it a go but but am not sure about references-certainly nothing I am aware of exists in book form,and photos are out there,but scattered.Not found any decent drawing of either,so that I can decide how to go about it. Are there references I have missed? Still trying to figure out main differences between the Wasp and the 2 (sort of) half sisters.
Opinions on the best source,either in 700 or 350 would be welcome,I have nothing in my stash so can go to either scale.

Hello all

I have not been looking at LHD type ships ever since 1987 when I had the privledge of visiting USS New Orleans in San Diego, I am more a WWII fleet carrier and BB fan...but last week I did an "impulse buy" on E-bay...couldn't resist that 16EUR LHD-6 kit fom Hobby Boss. I have to say I am impressed, very much impressed! Not knowing anything about the accuracy of that kit yet but in 1/700 this is the best detailed ship model I have seen so far! The details would even in 1/350 surprise you...in 1/700, breathtaking! Will have to start researching this type a bit more I guess...this kit looks like a winner!

My club mate Tony Firth sent me some pics of his 1/72 USS Makin Island LHD8 in the test pool recently, so I thought I'd share em with ya all....

We hope to have 3 big deck amphibs at our national regatta later in year....Tarawa, Saipan and Makin Island!

I somehow got unsubscribed to notifications (probably just missed one when busy) and am way late on this. Short answer is yes, all of them have this feature:

The Navy changed the server software they use for their image galleries a couple of years back and took the old servers off line, which broke the links. Unfortunately there's no easy way to translate them so updating would take a lot of work. All is not lost, however. If a subject sounds of interest you can click on the link and copy the name portion of the address (i.e. "051015-N-1189B-053.JPG") and do a search for it:

You will find copies rehosted elsewhere or the link to the new servers if the Navy is still hosting the image. They will go and purge "old" images after a period so it's worth saving those you find of use.

I have an extensive library of saved images for the Wasp LHDs (current count is around 2,800 images from various Navy sources) and can help out if anyone has need.

Has anyone who has built the Hobby Boss 1/700 Wasp class LHD kits found an issue with the missing padeyes? Are them even on the kits?

The missing padeyes were supposedly the issue on Revell's 1/700 Wasp class kits, as mentioned in reviews like this one quoted below.

Modern carrier decks are covered in �Padeyes�, circular sunken tie down points. Now these are quite a feature of any model carrier deck be them either moulded into the deck or as decal sheets. The Kearsarge deck has none of these and some would argue that they should be there. I am not sure how prominent these would be at 1:700 scale but I bet that the kit will come under criticism for leaving them off.

Just wondering if Hobby Boss made improvements, though the padeyes are not even mentioned in reviews of their LHD kits I've found so far.
