Yes, the fact that these details will remain very visible is one of the reasons why I got interested in this scene. I always loved all the details under the overhanging decks, and under the AA and other platforms, which are so typical with IJN carriers.
But at the same time, I only have to do half of them, as the overhanging deck at the bows and the entire port side is under water!
Win-win!

Always a real visual pleasure to see your new work, still amazing !
I also respect a lot people like you who have so much courage and perseverance to work on this kind of project, so big, so detailed, and so time-consuming !
I will go this year for first time at the Eindhoven SMC, in Oct. I hope to see it finished, and perhaps also some of your "old" works ? (because you're living not far and come by car, I suppose), like "Lexington Last Battle", and some small dioramas (like your famous 1/700-1/35 Highlander statue, which made me know your name for 1st time).

One by one! And redoing a lot that went on croocked the first time...

Good eyesight, a steady hand, and a bit of patience does help though, as do many years of practice.


Eric, it's a really great show, especially for armour and figures (they will have Bill Horan as special guest!), so I'm sure you won't regret! This year, it will be a two day show, so it will be more worthwhile to make the trip too. And I would love to meet you there!
If me and my family are in good health (which normally should be the case) I'll be there. And since my club normally has a clubstand there, I'll be bringing some older stuff too. I'll make sure to bring those two, and if you have any more requests, just send me a message a week before the show.
It would be nice if this dio would be finished by then, but since don't seem to be able to put enough hours into modelling nowadays, and this projects demands a quite involved paintjob (which is of course big part of the fun), I doubt it will be ready. I'll bring it as work in progress for the clubstand anyway, but I guess I better put some more work in it now...

Meanwhile, I finished the stern area.
The main element is the boat deck. This is the detail on the underside of it in the kit part. Quite good for 1/700, and with limited visibility in normal upright position more than acceptable:


But visibility will be higher on this diorama, so I sanded the detail down, and continued to thin the part as much as possible. I messed that up though, by overdoing one side, which became too thin. Not only made it this side very fragile, it also made the starboard AA-gun bulwark visibly thinner than the port one:


So I corrected my self-inflicted problem by applying a thin layer of Magic Sculp epoxy putty, and resanding carefully after hardening:


Here you see the difference this makes on the bulwarks:


I also cut away the port gangway part which will be 'under water', and carefully 'detached' the starboard gangway. The latter will be permanently attached to the hull, while the boat-deck will remain loose for easier painting:


Now, I only had to add a couple of details to the underside. They are a mix of generic PE, some cannibalised parts from the Lionroar PE set for Unryu, and stretched sprue:


And the topside also needed some details. They are made from leftover PE pieces, plastic sheet, stretched sprue, and a couple of parts from the Lionroar set:


After scratchbuilding the rearmost AA gun platform, I had these parts ready. They will remain detached for painting, but afterwards will quite easily click in place:


And this is how it looks like when put together. Only railings will follow later:

And it is sometimes too easy to forget the actual size of 1/700 scale models, so I had to include a match in at least one photo :

From my armor and figure modelling years, I'm used to assembling as much as possible before painting. It also helps a lot with weathering. But of course accessibility has to be kept in mind, so planning this out with ship models is a nice new challenge for me!

Well, my idea of extensive would probably be all details on the entire ship when it's finished. But that will still take some time, so you have a while to get a bucket ready!
