I can see some different renditions of them in various plan sets. At first glance, they look like vents but, their placement on that specific platform makes me think that they may be something like a torpedo adjustment table. If so, should be on legs, not a square base.

My 1st thought was vents, too. But i wondered if they were to do with the A.A defence? same number as 127mm mounts per side?
Also, What are the torpedo tables you mentions? I'm unfamiliar with the term.

Re: Calling all IJN Akagi and Kaga fans
It is a protected workbench of sorts, used for adjusting some of the finer mechanisms (mostly guidance) of a torpedo. It typically has a cover, or a protected enclosure on top. It is more commonly seen on a Japanese DD or cruiser, but it makes perfect sense to have them as part of the workshops aboard a CV.
The first three photos show a the box on legs aboard two different Fubuki class DDs. Both tables are to the left of the RDF/searchlight tower compartment, towards the lower right hand corner.
There is no view of the corresponding area aboard Akagi that is detailed enough to show anything. However, there is a highly detailed 1-100 model of Akagi, built by the owner of the Tam Tam model shops in Japan, in which these tables can (sort of) be seen. I'll do my best to show you the area, and then a cropping. The last image shows the legs of one unit, under the aerial mast. HTH.

Is this a new Akagi?

It says they are taking new orders, and is a "New Mold."

I'm pretty sure it is a re-pop of their new tooling, with colored parts instead of all grey. This seems to be the trend now, to draw in those interested in a more straightforward build. Also to draw off those who are interested in the Kantai Collection that Aoshima dominates.

Haha, but then again, you'd be surprised...
Akagi technically should be pronounced, probably, AH-KA-GUEE.
The gentleman at my store can never get it right, "AH-KA-GEE", Gee as in Geez!
LOL
Thread necromancy.
I just could not let this go, being so OCD about linguistics.
But "Akagi" is pronounced "?-Ka-G?"
"Ah-Ka-G?" would be spelled (in Hiragana) ????... For which I am not sure what the related Kanji would be.
??, or ???: Red Castle - or "Aku gaki" which combines to "A(ku/ga)ki", but the Hiragana for "k" seion has the dakuon "g" ... So the "Ku/Ga" syllables transliterate themselves to a "Ka" (the "K" of the "Ku" plus the "a" or the "Ga").
So if the ship's name was pronounced "AH"-Ka-G? (as the OP here posts, it would be spelled with a different kanji). It would change the meaning to "Oh Key" (as "Kagi" - ???? - means "key" and "Ah" - ?? - means "Oh").
Sorry.... This bugged me.

Which is a pity, because I have been thinking seriously about doing Carrier Division 1 of the Kid? Butai (I already have the Sh?kaku, and will likely be getting the Zuikaku for the same period).
And the Akagi and Kaga have been calling to me of late.

That Akagi hangar deck is amazing! However, unless you're building a cut-away model, most of the details will go unnoticed.Dan K wrote:There are these Rainbow alternatives for Akagi: http://www.rainbowmodel.com/prolist.asp?sortid=13

Yes... I saw that on eBay:Dan K wrote:There are these Rainbow alternatives for Akagi: http://www.rainbowmodel.com/prolist.asp?sortid=13
$125.99 w/Free Shipping

It does look worth it, though.
Akagi and Kaga are the two carriers I want to do after the Sh?kaku and Lexington. I just wish that there was a PE set for the Kaga as detailed as the Rainbow set for the Akagi.

The Model Art Special 61 coming out in August will be a special feature solely on the elusive Kaga. I for one know where my small change for the month is going

Hi guys,
Yes I have one of the 1/350 Kaga's to start, I picked the factory etch before the full set came out. The only area that is missing with the "Factory Etch" is both very rear supports for the flight deck, they are hollowed out in real life, the kit parts are solid plastic.

Eduard makes a replacement set for the rear columns. All my Akari stuff is on the way.

I have received the MASMS # vol. 61. There are several builds of Kaga in 1/700 & 1/350. The highlight is a magnificent 1/350 diorama of Kaga with her full first wave strike package for PH on deck, loaded and ready to go. JUst waiting to start engines.

Hi Zad
Thanks for your reply, however, I am in reference to the rear 1/350 supports for the Kaga kit, not Akagi. (Which do as you have said are made by Eduard)
Thanks anyway.

Re: Calling all IJN Akagi and Kaga fans
Hi
I have attached a pic of the rear of my 1/350 Akagi with the etch fitted.
The factory (Fujimi) Kaga & factory Etch Sets don't seem to have the very rear supports as etch, odd?
Hopefully Eduard will make them?
Thanks

Just wanting some clarification that Akagi was in fact painted in Yokosuka Gray for Pearl Harbor and Midway? TIA.

Probably, but she also spent a little time at Sasebo. Best review her TROM from Nov. 1940 - Oct. 1941 and decide for yourself -

Re: Calling all IJN Akagi and Kaga fans
Thanks for the reply Dan. I had been looking over her TROM and other sites like this for the past couple of days and it appeared that Yokosuka was the only place where the ship could be in port long enough to have the work done. I am just looking to see if there is a consensus on the paint color. Thanks again.
