Best Dull Coat?

Hey all

I'm in process of building my New Jersey and ready to seal off some area that are painted. However, I'm used to just using Testors Dull Coat in a rattle can, which I think it going to spray too much product onto the ship. Almost all of the paints I've used on the New Jersey are acrylic, so far.

What dull coat brands have you been using for air brushing that you've found that have worked well? I see Testors has a dull coat in a bottle, any luck with it?

I recently used their lacquer dull coat in the small glass bottle with good results. Cut it with lacquer thinner and was very careful to not flood any area. For reference, used it on some 1/700 commission work and worked like a charm. I have used various other brands/types but it's my current choice.

And you are correct, spray cans will almost guarantee you apply more than is needed. If at all possible, do not use them, but it understand some folks do not have an airbrush and it's their only option.

I've found the best matte coat is Tamiya Flat Base cut with Future about 25 - 75, respectively. You can play around with the formula to go from a dead flat coat to satiny sheen. Note: never use Tamiya Flat Base straight; it will turn a chalky white with heavier residues in recesses and corners. If you do do that, no problem, you just spray on Future and the chalky-ness will disappear.

Tamiya now makes a liquid flat base, in both semigloss and flat. Love the flat.
