Calling all King George V-class (WWII) fans

Hi All,

Sorry to jump in on the thread but I need a bit of help if possible.....I'm attempting a 1/350 Tamiya Prince of Wales (Denmark Straits) with the Pontos detail set as an aside from my usual tanks etc. I think the detail from the Pontos kit warrents a bit of detail on the hull as well and want to try masking tape & primer hull plating. All I get from a 'google' are very distant and rather grainy photos and would like to know if there are any good references for the hull plating layout she had.

Any help or pointers are most appreciated .

Hello,
Could anybody identify which of these pom poms directors from this NorthStar models image that matches the drawing I have of the Lion Class Battleship? For me I would guess the one furthest to the left....??

I know Martocticvs has already posted photos of them, but just to be very sure, as I may spend quite a bit of money there for two of this set (there are �4 of each type, Lion has �6, all of one same type, so two sets will be required.) Also, because I am not so familiar with the appearance of this director that I can point it out myself. Here is the drawing I have:

Did you already find the cross section of the turret on the Navweaps website? I believe it is quite accurate.

Thanks for the suggestion Maarten. That cross section is not bad, but I just got quite a few high res drawings of nearly every angle of the turret from Giuseppe (aka peppe.) He has such a large collection of books and plans!

Hi guys. Quick question. I recently acquired the 1 350 Prince of Wales by Tamiya, and the Gorgeous Pontos kit to turn her into the duke of York (1943 obviously!!!! ) . However to help me I bought the Witold Koszela book. This has only added to my confusion. Untill I read that book I saw no reference to DoY having painted decks, but this shows her as having painted decks. Since many British vessels did have painted decks (personally I consider painted decks the elephant in the room of British ww2 warship modelling) and this book series I generally very reliable, I'm not sure if I should do bare wood or paint the decks. Could someone please advise if they know if she had bare wood decks or painted. Especially during the Sharnhorst engagement.

These scans are of photos* of Duke of York as she appeared in 1943. The decks are certainly very dark. IMHO, they appear to be painted dark gray.

Thanks guys, all great help. So dark grey deck it is, not seen anybody model that yet so hoping to be the first to post some piks of 1943 DoY with dark grey secks (personally I think it will look amazing). Now just a 1 350 sharnhorst to "destroy"

As far as I'm aware, DoY had all horizontal surfaces, including the wooden decks, painted/stained dark grey at the time of the Scharnhorst battle. I can't point to any sources for that, it is just the impression I'm left with from what I have seen and read on the subject over the years.

Well my 'Royal Navy and Commonwealth Ship Camouflage volume 2' arrived today. It also shows with painted decks, so defo doing that. It also however shows her upper works in a sort of 'mid olive' colour that was apparently used by the home fleet. Apparently the author really is an expert but this is the first I have heard or seen. I'm inclined to trust him and go with it though as he does seem to know his stuff and I think it could produce a really striking ship! Did the home fleet use that sort of pale/mid olive colour its literally the first I'm hearing of it.

Is the color a bit like on the gun barrel? I only saw volume one but I did notice that the colors in that volume were very much off and would not trust it at all.

The documented measured colour values in official correspondence at the time for B30 (the one portrayed as olive) make it a blue along with all the other Bxx colours, the B being understood to imply Blue and the two numbers denoting reflectance.

Hi,

Would Prince of Wales have had boats on the boat deck when she sailed out to her last battle from Singapore? Tried to look at the photos I have but could not be 100 % sure whether the boats were there or not. In the battle against Bismarck boats seem to have been on board.

Hi All

Hi Jari yes the boats were still aboard when PoW sailed on Dec 8th.

We know this because thanks to crew stories of the sinking, they say that before she sank the lashings were taken off the carley floats and boats and some were used by survivors to cling to until picked up by destroyers.

During the Bismarck action the hits on the boat deck and crane and funnel caused a fire that destroyed the boats which were replaced during her action damage repair in Rosyth.

Thank you for the information! I had taken it for granted that the boats were on board but then I found a photo showing the ship with an empty boat deck. However, it turned out that that photo was taken before PoW sailed to Singapore but I did not know this when I posted the question.
