Dan K, thank you for the explanation. The location of the type 21 radar is a foregone conclusion.
I understand that the windshield was then removed from the deck.

What was the diameter of the searchlights placed on the board, next to the elevator on the stern? 60 cm?

Very nice progress! :thumbs_up_1:

For the searchlight and fire control items, I can recommend very much the products from Shelf Oddity. Their detail is amazing!

Cheers,

Dan K, I found another problem to solve.
Distribution of radio masts on both sides of the deck. Do arrangement was symmetrical? Drawings of books and Internet generally show that they were symmetrical. However, based on photos of Taiyo, I doubt.

Another problem. Is Chuyo had a flight deck length of 150 m or 172 m?
Figures show Chuyo with long deck. On the Internet I found information that decks extended only for Taiyo and Un'y?.

Modernizations:
summer 1943, Taiyo, Unyo: - 2 x 2 - 25/60; + 8 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 21-go radar
7/1943, Chuyo: + 6 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 5 x 1 - 13.2/76, 21-go radar
5/1944, Taiyo: flight deck was lengthened to 172.0 m; - 6 x 1 - 120/45; + 4 x 2 - 127/40 89-shiki, 4 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 28 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 5 x 2 - 13.2/76
8/1944, Unyo: flight deck was lengthened to 172.0 m; + 4 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 28 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 5 x 2 - 13.2/76

The radio masts were placed symmetrically along the flight deck. See below.

Interestingly, the Gran Prix Shuppan volume on IJN CVs cites a lengthened flight deck length of 172m x 23.7m wide specifically for Chuyo but not the others, unless that was meant to be an example. Since I don't really read Japanese, it's tough to be sure.

Dan K, thank you very much for information.

Conclusions of my investigation into the radar:
1. Triplets (T, CH, U) are launched without radars.
2. At the beginning of 1943, radars are installed on the right side of the deck (T, CH, U) - image Tayo 30 September 1943.
3.Unyo (Taiyo?) gets a radar in the middle of the deck between 17 and 27 October 1943.

I'm not quite sure how you arrived at this conclusion. There's more room for them in front of the elevator, and that was the standard practice.

I think that in this photo radar is located on the right side of the deck.
If the radar was placed in the middle of the deck, it would be seen more on the right side of the photo.

The photo angle is from the starboard stern quarter, so we are not seeing the radar from an angle perpendicular to the axis of the ship. Also, you are assuming the radar is oriented perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the ship. That is not necessarily so.

I would be very cautious about your conclusion. FWIW.

After a long break, I come back to the Unyo 1944 project.
The polystyrene stage is practically completed. I've come to the stage - photo-etched elements. At 1/700 scale it is a very big challenge and ... I have no experience. :(
By putting the elements together, I like the model more and more. :)
I try to recreate the look of Unyo as faithfully as possible in the second half of 1944.
There are very few materials and I would like to thank Dan K. for all valuable comments.

I am impressed with this new model. Various modeling techniques, various materials. Fantastic job.
It is a pity that there is so little material about these aircraft carriers. I also have one Aoshima model in stock as a starting material.

Finally, I can show effects of my painting work.
This is my first attempt with an airbrush in 1/700 scale. it's not easy. Fear all the time that it will streaks.
I use LifeColor IJN WWII Late War Set 2.
