Victorious Hull Preview ready for 1/96 Scale Build

I look forward to seeing your progress on the carrier, I am working on my first carrier now and although Im not building the one I had wanted, I am enjoying it very much.
I have been hearing about a type of plastic sheet for about 10 years now called sintra (I think it is called) and it looks like ABS sheet but it is much lighter and in-fact it floats!
I am using 1/8� sintra for the flight deck and it seems to be perfect for the job, I like the way it cuts and sands, it takes ca glue very well and can be painted easily.
I have had the boat out running about ten times now in the warm southern California sun and it has held up just fine!
I plan to plank over it with 1.5mm wood decking and I would not be surprised if with all the added detail along the deck edge and the small island attached, that this might just float incase of some unforeseen event.
This stuff is PVC foam board and Im sure it could be found in the UK!
I just wanted to mention this stuff because of how nice it is and how perfect it has been for my carrier.
I wanted to build the WW2 enterprise or the Zuikaku but settled on the much more compact Bogue class Copahee CVE 12.

I am not sure yet what I will use for the flight deck, but I will more than likely use 4mm Birch Ply, with under deck bracing beams. I have an 8 foot x 2 foot sheet of this and I like working with wood rather than plastic.

Not sure about the planes as yet, but I prefer the British aircraft, rather than the American. I rather like the Swordfish and Hurricanes, but again I have not got any definate plans at the moment. I could model this ship in any period from built to 1955. After that period, she was lengthened and had her angle deck fitted. The hull I have is the straight deck version.

I understand about the planes, the corsairs might look a bit out of place; I just like them a lot!
Maybe some spitfires!

Victorious had quite an interesting carreer and flew many types of aircraft during her lifetime.
She started with the trusty old Fairey Swordfish in 1941 and ending her days in 1968 with the Buccaneer Mk2 and Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen.

She was on loan to the U.S. Navy during 1945 as U.S.S. Robin and returned back to British control after hostilities ceased.

She went into dockyard hands in 1950 for a major modernisation, costing �20,000,000. and recommissiond in Feb 1958 having been lengthened by 40 ft and given an angle deck.

Your list is a bit shorter if you are not doing the angled flight deck version. Personally I love the Buccaneer, those things used to part your hair when they did mock attacks.

That was interesting to read, probably the Call Sign Robin, was the reason it got called the Robin, but obviously she sailed under her own name. Thank's for pointing it out

Yes I did Ron. Sometime in the future when Vic is built, we will have to have a reunion with your North Caroliner and my Victorious.

I had the hull on the bench today and have fitted the keel in position, bonding it to the hull base with epoxy filler paste. It was cut from a length of pine and is 1" deep by 5/8"" wide. I put anchor screws near the keel base, every six inches on each side, with 1/2" protruding, these were then covered with the filler to the hull base, allowing the keel to be firmly stuck down. The next job will be to put in some frames, using 1/4" ply.
