Can we identify her?.

You're correct, and the file name says "Anson" on it :heh:

Looks like some ocean liner post ww2 hospital ship duty?
Channell wrote:@Big Build...Just various drains; I think they are OK, but that's just my opinion.

I'm currently working on the other end of the hawsepipes; as I mentioned earlier in the thread the kit hawsepipe exits aren't shaped right. They should be more round:
I think the pic you posted is misleading for the angle seen distorts oval into circle. I mean your new version doesnt feel right...
I undedstand your suspicion; I felt that way too until I did some more digging.

From the HMS Hood association:

...and a clearer view (It's hard to find pics of Hood without her anchors on!)

Bear in mind that's not the finished product for me either... I purposely left the rings thick for some final tweaking and am in the process of shaping them (ran out of putty so I'm stalled out until I can make the 50 mile 1-way trip to my nearest LHS... seems to happen a lot to me for some reason! ) so the rings will be much thinner and less pronounced when I'm done.

I'm open for any evidence to the contrary... I agree that round feels "weird" but I must go where the evidence takes me. :wave_1:

Youve convinced me. OK. I guess when covered in anchors its harder to spot this. Damn, now I look at my 1/700 and wonder... but will let it be I guess, too late to change. What bugged me more is actually how the empty one on the starboard side looks, like whats the shape of the opening so to speak. Thats very hard to get from all the pics...

Another question - kit parts C2 looks like a kind of "stove pipe" fixed at the front of both funnels. Never seen
any photos or drawings featuring this item. Should we omit this detail?.

Not as far as I know, the AOTS does not show them. The original shell expansion plan shows all the pump discharge locations but not the discharge for the scuppers. I added them from what photographs I could find (did not have the plan then) and did not check if they match with the plans and scupper location (these are in the AOTS deck plans).

Incidentally, the plans show the forward hawsepipe openings to be slightly oval (at a 45 deg angle, between an oval and a circle with a parallel midbody) and the aft hawsepipe opening to be round.

The holes I am talking about appear in this October 1940 photo where Hood is getting her Home Fleet Grey (AP507B)... OMG I've just found out when she went from Light Grey to dark grey... I digress.

If you look just above the water line (above her black boot), you can see a number of what appear to be drain holes.

Those are the pump discharges _ was referring too; there's a bunch of them and yes, port side and starboard are different.

Yeah, they are different, they just look really out of scale... I'll see what they look like once painted.

Todays update.

I'm working on the fore and aft funnels to make them the correct size, as per Grizly's post, I've got the two funnels done, just workin on the base... should be done v v soon (thats what I said 3 hours ago.

What do you plan to do regarding booms? She had one big one 50ft on the hull, and 3 smaller ones stowed on the superstructure. Got any good detail info on those and their location on May 22 in battle in 1941? They moved rafts in part as well and thats known but the booms on the hull sides I wonder about... also their color / gray or wood. if wood / what color... You research the ship, you must know this. Im at that stage on my 1/700 and wondering what to do next.

OH! Thanks EJF... nice pix there.

Regarding the booms and colour, most things like this where painted the hull colour.

My Hood is based some time between March 1940 and Oct 1940, as beyond this date, there is not much clear info of what was what on her.

To any of you and Mr Pontos... I got my second fret 5 a couple of weeks ago, and I'm going hell for leather on the funnels as I type this... The wrap around sheet for the funnels is awesome, and fits perfectly with my scratch built correction for the rear funnel error that Trumpeter decided to throw the curve ball in...

My Question is... looking at fret 5, I see a number of "parts" that don't have numbers next to them, and they are jammed in everywhere... they are round, and almost look like port holes, there are 12 of them in between parts 404 and 402 at the top left of fret 5 alone...

if anybody has any idea what these are, I'd be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi EJF,
I've just gone and looked at that website, it's a real treasure trove.

Thanks.

Still looking for what those strange un numbered parts are, I'm really thinking they are port holes, but can't find anything on the pontos instructions

Big Build - those "holes" are porthole scuttles. They are spread all over the other frets. No need to "fret" anymore. (Pun intended)

Dam, wish I'd known that a few weeks back, I did suspect that, but I went out and bought a generic rain guard set, after I sanded down the hull, it was as smooth as a baby's bottom, I also corrected the eronius (spelling) port holes/scuttles, so it's going to work out pretty well.

Insidently, I'm lighting the kit as well, so it's going to look really good.

Thanks heaps for letting me know.

Kind regards

Have just put together the boat cradles - parts 471 - 476 on Pontos fret # 7. A few months ago it was pointed out that the
supports did not line up with the slots provided on the kit, hence parts 471 were of the wrong size. I decided (IMHO) that the
kit supplied boats - D11 and 12 were a good fit if the cradles were constructed as is. I feel that the boats would not rest as well
if installed on the rejigged part 471 (too long). I used the slot for part 473 (longer one) and filled the slot for part 476 (shorter one). Drilled
out a new slot for the shorter support and dry fitted both sides with the boats installed. I am sure the desired result can be achieved
without the hassle of obtaining the Pontos upgrade. I am prepared to be contradicted but more importantly, hope i have made myself
clear !!!.

This is the quality of my images.
Some are even more unclear.
I got them from another model builder.
