Thanks so much, Jose!

Actually, I would be grateful for some critical comments on the way I did this WIP thread. This was my first attempt and I admit it took more extra work than anticipated compared to a simple summary of modifications like I did for my previous builds. I got some very useful replies to some questions related to the build that I raised, but I can perhaps achieve similar in private conversations. It is indeed very encouraging to receive all the support and praise, theres no doubt about it - and thanks again to everyone!

Some of my related questions:
- is it worth this extra work from the followers / readers point of view?
- what do you expect from a WIP in general?
- what should I have done differently? Did you miss anything?

Thanks!

P.S. may I prehaps also ask one of the admins to move this thread to the Completed builds section?

I think it benefits a lot of board members to have an interactive W-I-P. Plus, you potentially gain from having a wider circle of potential feedback, if not on history, then on techniques. My 2 cents.

Thanks for your feedback, Dan and Martin! Your points taken.

Anything that I might have done better/different about this WIP?
Better photos, or better photo resolution (would require using external service like Flickr in case of the final photos)?
More attention to anything?
Whatever else?

Beautiful works for the model and your care for details! I don't know about feedback, but this is already detailed WIP documentation, very helpful and inspirational for beginners like me :thumbs_up_1:

I also like battle of savo island, hopefully someday i could build Chokai as good as yours

Hello Nopefield, I am glad you like my little Yunagi and thanks for the feedback on my WIP documentation. I saw your Mogami and I like it :thumbs_up_1: , it reminded me about times (not too distant) before I slipped down into the "detailing craziness" Im in right now. Its just upon your decision how much detail do you want, but beware that once you get into it theres no easy way out ;). Fingers crossed!

I have just seen the model in the gallery;

Fine model--very good presentation ad great 'feel' with much fine detail ! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

1 x small obseravtion.;

I like the streamer at the fwd mast-- but like less the rising sun ensign--it does look a bit lifeless ...

With decal flags
whilst still damp, wrap them in a piece of paper and then crumple using tweezers in a vertical fashion
The paper softens the radius of the fold and prevents breakage.
quote from the Wien build of mnine 10 years ago (!)

The Ensigns of various sizes were drawn on the PC using Serif drawplus8. wien33
They were printed onto whiter decal paper, sprayed with liquid decal film and cut out, and folded back to back. Once they had been dried they were sandwiched in tissue paper and brutally crumpled. The tissue paper softened the radius of bend and prevented the decals splitting or getting scratched. The same procedure was followed for the signal flags(from my ever dwindling supply of Dunagain decals)

Once dry and crumpled the flags were all given a light coat of matt varnish.

examples here below of decal flags in 1/700 )that have been crumpled in a paper sandwich as described above

hope this helps

and it can still be done retrospectivly ( with a new ensign! ) :wave_1:

Hello Jim, thanks for your point, you are absolutely right! I should have made the ensign look more similar to the sleeves on the foremast (which I made from kitchen alu foil crumbled and painted white). I will make a new, more crumbled ensign to show the wind - it can be replaced easily, it was attached using white glue.

Any other observation?

Fantastic work Vladi! Great detailing and painting, and brought to life with an excellent seascape and crew. A model really to my personal taste! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Since you ask for input, one suggestion for the next model: you could paint the 'chain' or 'cable' parts of the railings in a different (darker) colour. Even when these were painted the same colour as the rest of the ship, due to their 'texture' they look different from a distance.
Painting them for example a dark dirty brown will provide a bit of extra variation and therefore life to a model, and will make them look a bit thinner. If you apply a bit of lighter brown only to the top of them after that (like a highlight), they will look even thinner.
You could also do this with cables that are part of PE-pieces, like the cables of the boat davits.
An example:

Cheers,

Marijn

Good point, Marijn, thanks a lot for bringing it out! I have actually done it on some of my previous builds but it did not become a usual practise to me so I totally forgot to do it here.
I especially love suggestions to issues like this (or Jims) - that can still be corrected :D
