What do you use for matte varnish?

I don't!

If I need to put down decals I give a bit alclad aqua gloss under the decals and vallejos satin varnish or flat varnish, but just on top of the decals.
Otherwise I don't use any varnishes at any point now that I'm using Tamiyas acrylics.

Thoughts so. Things look way too matte for varnish. BUt how then use oils on Tamiya matte paint, contrary to the whole gloss technique washes etc? wow. quite skilled. or lazy - at least im lazy, as I also avoid the gloss varnish completely. Tamiya is quite strong paint to take even mild clean ups without any coating. I found that matte varnish ends up giving things a small gloss as well, which I dont like.

Tamiyas acrylics with Mr leveling thinner IS very strong. And using oil based products on top of them doesn't harm them in anyway. I'm using products mostly designed for modeling though, so I don't use just any random white spirit from the hardware store.
To my experience, using primer and letting the Tamiyas dry for 24hours and you're good to go throw oils at them. If you don't let them properly dry you risk getting some blemishes of the white spirit when drying.

I understand using varnishes when dealing with gloss or semi gloss paints and using decals to get the silvering off but otherwise I don't think it serves any purpose.

Im with you, if anyting they take away a lot of the detail, especially spray can ones.

Some smaller details I've been working on.

Added some warning lights near the aft boom.

Used some 0.2mm brass wire to get the basic shape of the lights.

After this the light bulb section was build up using white glue.

After painting the bulb section is first painted chrome silver, then some light clear orange.

The usual electric lines added.





One RQ-2 Pioneer standing on the platform ready to be launched.

Some addition details to the pioneer equipment.

Containers for the equipment added behind the aft turret.







Started to add the life rafts.



Some grab handle ladders and some leasure activities added.



All the rest of the directors finished.



Anchors and jack staff finished.

This is beautiful work. I'm making my way through the USS New Jersey with the Pontos set and I've been using your build as inspiration. A couple questions if you don't mind.

1. Do you have any close-up photos of the 60-foot booms on the sides of the hull? I'm not entirely clear how to assemble them from the instructions and even zooming in the resolution of the images are only so good.

2. How did you attach the fences at the stern? Did you drill holes to attach the fences at the stern? If so, was there a guide included in your set or did you work from a reference photo? I can't find anything specific in the instructions but looking at the instructions for the advanced Missouri set I can see there was a template provided (missing, I think from the New Jersey set).

The 60ft booms are stored back in the aft on the flight deck. I cut them half like reference showed and placed them there.
I scratch build the correct boom on the side of the hull.

For the netting I used the provided template to drill the holes to the hull and it fit quite well!

And prolly the last update before finishing!

After seeing this I knew exactly what I wanted to have on the helipad!



Only one I could find in 1/350 for the moment was a Sea Dragon from Orange hobby so that had to do!

The chopper is made of resin and some PE details. I dressed her up with my own details including grab handles wires etc. details.















And on the deck! Had to move the Pioneer a bit and added one deck equipment tractor.

Next something small! And prolly a waterline with some crew action like you said.
I think that`s the next step, as I want to bring it to the next level model by model!
So something new to learn and to incorporate with the old!
