Hi Geoff I've had a look at the profile drawing and the stern casting would not be quite as Ron has outlined . It is in fact more rounded but not as rounded as on the GRP hull .

I will sort it out Dave, it shouldn't need all that much filler to bring it to the right shape. The width at the stern is a bit narrow and should have been moulded not as sharp, but I can't do anything about that, as it would mean cutting of the rear end fro before the gun sponsons and reshaping the whole back end. It's only about an inch out of true, and unless you compare it with the profile, you wouldn't notice it anyway.

Dave that was just a general idea , he has the same book as me ,so he knows the shape, as you say it is a little bit more rounded but has to be flat under the rudder section,

You will see the difference from the plans, when I bring it on April 2nd, but it's not worth loosing any sleep over it, it's just one of Deans anomolies.

Following Ron's advice at the stern, where the rudder is situated, and examining the plans, I decided to try and get the hull shaped flat above the rudder to as near as possible, without loosing the flowing curve of the hull.

First I angled the rudder blade on the leading edge, as Ron had outlined on the photo of his sggested shape. Cutting this with a hacksaw, caused the filler to crack, so I redid the rudder with filler again, once I had got it the right shape.

Next, I bonded several peices of thick balsa sheet together, to build up most of the space needed to be filled on the hull and bonded this to the hull with 2 part epoxy.

Then I shaped it with sandpaper until I had got it right. Here you can see the new shaped rudder and the balsa, which has been sanded to shape.

Next I applied a good layer of body filler, then sanded this to shape.

Once this had been reasonably sanded down, I applied another layer, to fill in any gaps and dents, left by the first sanding.

Once this had hardened, It was rough sanded again to shape, followed by finer sanding dry, using 600 wet & dry paper, and finally finished off wet, using 1200 w&d paper, until it was glass smooth and here is the finished result, complete with rudder in place.

You must agree. it is certainly an improvement to what shape the hull was originally, by comparing the next two photo's.

Yes I agree thre Ron, thank's for pointing it out in the first place. Lost half a days work on it by doing it, but it does look 100% better now.

The wash from that third prop will now go back straight along the hull in stead of upwards, more efficent when sailing, no rooster tail.

Just a quickie tonight. The Vic has received her first bottom coat of Red Oxide Primer which was put on yesterday evening.

Not had chance to do a lot today, except that all the various gun and director platforms have now been fitted. Here you can see the two Port Pom Pom gun platforms. I have built up underneath them with scrap balsa, which will be covered tomorrow with body filler, to make the sponson support.

More tomorrow.

It probably sounds like a cop out but working weekends, which is when I normally do my stuff. I have not touched Naiad since Christmas, and new security means I cannot check out the sight from work anymore. But I do keep checking in occasionally from home and watching yours and Ron's progress with keen interest.

However with the weather improving I will get the gazebo up soon and be able to work on a night when I get home, and since the eldest has now been accepted into the army he leaves in September and his room will become a shipyard come spare bedroom so I will not be so hampered next winter.

Keep up the sterling work!
