Maru Special 16- good for photos
Model Art 36 (I think there are a few others, but I am not able to check right now)-usually good photos (though small) and great build articles.
The best drawings would be from Miyukikai for either the original version (1933) or the first reconstruction (1934). A little expensive but by far the best.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
hello, i'm planning to build ryujo from fujimi (SWM(EX) SP57, the one with pe parts included), and want to convert it to 1942 version (specifically when she struck USS Pope) but doesn't know which part is changed from her refit except his bridge. Does anyone know other significant changes to her after second and third refit?

Well, for one, her forecastle was raised by one deck. That's a pretty significant change. Also the bridge face was made more round.
They'll be some significant scratch-building involved.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
Some clarification is needed here. Do you mean hatchs, and do you mean on the outside of the hull, or inside the hangar deck?

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
I used the planes from the Lion Roar early IJN carrier planes.
There are colored bands as decals included.
Here is my model from the gallery:

Hobby Elements (HK) makes 1/700 IJN aircraft decals: https://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/page/advan ... esult.html
I have 1mb images, but I don't think that they actually show more useful detail.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
I am working on my first ship in 1/350 scale: Fujimi's IJN Hiryu.
It seems like the kit is designed to make you put the 3 elevators in the fully up position.
I have see lovely builds with the elevators down or halfway down. How are modelers doing that? Is that all scratch built? Are there aftermarket elevator kits available?
It's not as simple as lowering the elevator platform, as you then have internal detail to worry about on the hangar deck!
How do you do this?

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
All scratch-built. There's virtually nothing available in 1/350. THere are some PE versions available in 1/700.
Funny that you should ask this now. I'm currently scratch-building 1/700 versions for my Taiho, with an eye to doing the same thing in 1/350 for my own Hiryu and Zuikaku. (see bottom of p1 into p2: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=171880 )

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
Over dinner, a friend and I were talking about Paul Allens work on WW2 shipwrecks and he showed me some images of Hiryu burning. What immediately caught my eye and apparently has made him wonder for years was the large shadowy structure in front of the bridge. I believe the consensus is that it is the hangar deck elevator but in my mind, it looks nothing at all like it. It appears to be bulbous. Are there any other angles that show it other than the image below?

There is one other view below. It's unmistakenly her forward elevator. I also posted a more clear view of your image.
